Angry 3 Hurricanes and not a scratch...then came the armadillo...

WHAT A LITTLE BASTARD!

So my car has had to sit OUTSIDE through the past few hurricanes, and she didn't even get a scrach the whole time.

Tonight, I'm driving home from a friends, doing about 60 in a 55, when a god damn armadillo runs, and I mean RUNS right in front of my car. Oh wow, nothing to do but hit the brakes...SMACK....oops too late.

I pull over to find my bumper like this:

ouch...poor lip!

underside all busted and hanging down...

YEAH that will teach you to pull **** like that.

so any estimates on repairs? it seems like **** is pretty torn up underneath too. i had to pull out a few plastic pieces and **** is still dragging when i drive. Not sure if I want to have the bumper fixed...or just slap on a whole new one.

I hate florida.

that sucks man... A couple years back I had a deer run into my driver door while I was going 60 down some country roads by my house one night. I was driving along minding my own business and then out of the corner of my eye I see this deer head bouncing up and down and before you know it smacks into my driver side door. I slam on the brakes and I come to a stop in front of a deer warning sign. Would of been nice if they put that sign a mile or so back. Bah!

Yah, my initial reaction has been to evade on small animals. Now I say screw it. If you can get them with the tire then there will be less damage to you.

Fuji, its going to either really cheap, or not.

1st, get that undertray off, It looks like you need another one and Ray @ Malloy has them cheap.

Now your bumper is interesting. Cheap, you could probably glue/epoxy it back, and just the crack will show. Possibly some good tape/reinforcement on the underside.

If you want to go the insurance route, and have a $500 deductible, it might be worth your time. You might want to at least see what the estimate is. A new nose and body shop labor might add up to 99 nose and lights, but I don't know about the rebar. Nose labor is easy to do yourself.

PS Can you tell us how the story with your brother and that fight ended up?

yeah right now im not sure about my options. i do have the money for my insurance deductable...so if i could get them to cover a new one i think i might go that route. otherwise, ill prob just fix it myself.

oh yeah. the kid who jumpped my brother (dont forget the kid was 17) ended up with a year of probation including: 7am curfew, 200hr community service, 5 teen court appearances, and he had to pay for all damages (medical & to his car). the judge was pissed after he saw the video tape. he said something like "this is very disturbing just to watch on tape". pretty much, if the kid gets picked up for anything within the next year he will end up in a program.

thanks for asking

hmmmm well time to call the insurance company

Fujikuro, while it looks like your bumper cover is split clean, and it's pretty low, you might be able to have it repaired. But if it were mine, I replace it. You can check the costs both ways, but to be done properly, it might cost as much to have it repaired as finding a GOOD used cover. Either way you'll have refinishing costs. In any event, sorry to hear about it. Most of us have been there. Where I live it's usually suicidal deer.

BTW, I would have sent this reply earlier but I was linking that picture of that poor, defenseless ....STUPID armadillo to PETA's website.

I posted a link to this on another forum... here is someones response.

his first mistake was braking. you NEVER brake when you see an animal. you always gun it especially in a small car. this raises your front end and lifts it over the animal or makes you hit the animal higher (if its a deer your hitting body instead of legs, which = deer flying forward instead of legs where it comes into the windsheild). with small animals if you gun it you have less of a chance hitting it with the front end and tearing your bumper up. you may hit it with the undercarrage but you have a better chance not messing anything up that way.

Not braking? Guys, I don't know about you, but the front of my car doesn't dive all that much, even when braking hard. I'd have to guess less than 2" with my coilvers. So NOT braking isn't going to make that much difference where the animal strikes the car, but slowing down WILL reduce the force of the collision. And even a little reduction might make all the difference.
Likewise, PVerdieck's quote of the guy suggesting you should accelerate? Ok, your already moving at let's say, 40 mph. You see a deer in your headlights and you punch it. Even if you've got 400 hp at the wheels, your only going to "lift [the front end]" a small amount. I can't see that making any difference either, except to increase the force of the collision. As an accident reconstructionist, I can tell you with some certainty that if we hit a deer square with our cars, it's coming at the windshield. Whether or not it comes through the windshield will primarily be a function of the car's speed at impact.
Nobody should be suggesting what to do in these situations using words like "ALWAYS" and "NEVER". Just my .02.

yes i agree with you...

anyway, talked to my insurance. the adjuster is a moron...she could hardly speak english haha.

lucky for me, my insurance only wants $250.

i have to take it to get a quote tomorrow, then im taking it to Corvette's West for the repairs. i stopped by corvettes and he said that if the bumper happens to rip the rest of the way through, he knows it will have to be replaced....

*oh gosh i hope it doesnt rip all the way through before i go see the guy who does the repair estimates!!!* heh

look like im ending up with an aftermarket bumper 99spec anyone????

THANK YOU ARMADILLO!
