2nd day at the strip- ruined the syncros
Hey guys,
Well, the title basically says it all...I missed 3rd on one of my runs and trying to get into 5th was like kitting a brick wall, that can't be good for the already fragile 5th gear syncros. Anyway, on the way home, whenever I shifted into 5th the tranny was really grinding.
What do new syncros cost, and what is involved in the replacement? Do I have to pull the engine in order to get at the tranny, or can I drop it out of the bottom of the car?
My best run of the night was a 14.01@102.96 didn't miss the shift) , spinning the wheels all the way through the 60' mark (2.335). I launching a 4k on the stock rims w/ p7000 supersports, and it felt like I was getting wheelhop as I shifted into 2nd gear. Would a lower launch rpm help this? What else could I do?
Thanks for any help,
kyle

The synchos are relatively inexpensive, but putting them in is labor intensive. If you aren't very mechanically inclined then you should let someone else do the work.

I do a lot of things myself but did not tackle the syncros.
Made a short drive to dave @kdr about 1 year ago it cost about 450.00 for everything and was worth it.
As a afterthough I upgraded to an act clutch as the labor charge was a;most a freebee.
PS I do hope you are getting a short shifter to eliminate the 3rd gear miss ???

I was thinking about the short shifter, but most people say that it doesn't help at all.
Besides clutch and flywheel, are there any other recommended mods to do while the tranny is out??
Thanks,
Kyle

I just had my 5th gear synchro replaced. Tranny labor was $198 including all parts except the synchro itself (I bought that ahead of time ~$23). Didn't have to have the tranny removed since I was having the clutch done already. To Prevent future grindings, I recomend buying the upgraded gear shift select spindle. It's the same part # but includes a stronger spring. Replace it and the gasket.
