1994 Airbag Diagnostic Module Repair

Hey there. I just recently purchased a '94 SSM touring. The previous owner said he disabled the airbags because the module had "failed." So I decided to look into because I'd like for my airbags to work. I took the module out of the car and disassembled it. I found the issue (bad transistor maybe?) I'm not totally sure what I'm looking at exactly since it's been melted so much and isn't distinguishable. I need to specify that I have looked at the repair thread on here and that particular write up is for a '93. The '93 and '94 are NOT the same. So if you guys can take a look at the pictures and help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!!

adub,

Ouch! That is some serious charring! The board may be damaged beyond repair. Could you take close-in photos of the damage? What does the other side of the board look like? Wipe down the charred areas with a few cotton swabs dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Make sure to take those close-in photos before AND after you attempt to clean it. Do the same with the other side too.

Cheers,
George

Ok I cleaned it up the best I could (trying not to do anymore damage). This is where I got. First pictures are other side of board. There is nothing in this location. Next are before cleaning and lastly are after...

I don't think there is anything to solder to anymore. Looks like the board got real toasty. Unfortunately this is a discontinued part.

Check the classifieds section for a working unit wout similar issues. Check also w Fritz Flynn here on the forum. He can usually hook you up with a very fair deal.

Yup, the magic smoke left the board for good. I'm with Topolino's recommendation. Reach out to Fritz to see if he has a spare for you.

Thanks guys. I just sent him a PM so hopefully he has one or can source one. I posted a WTB in the classifieds as well. Really hoping I can find the right one and get my airbags back to being functional.

A bit unrelated, but I will be installing a 94 dash harness into my 93, and I understand that the 94 used a passenger air bag. Will I be alright using the 94 harness with my 93 dash and airbag computer, or should I swap the 93 airbag harness onto the newer dash harness?

Peanut,

Yes, it is off-topic. Have you researched the differences between the 2 wire harnesses?

Cheers,
George

spyder,

Well, don't close the thread just yet. Did you get a new board from Dale's connection? Did you fix the problem? Alternatively, you could also share a photo of the new unit and list the part numbers of the burned up components!

Cheers,
George

I actually ended up getting one from another member. Board matches identically to the one I had. I currently won't be able to take any pictures of the unit for the next 10 days. Traveling. I will take some when I get back though. I'm not sure if the issue is fixed yet. Haven't tried out the module. I'm dealing with other engine issues right now 😭

Stupid me, had key in ON position and hooked up the battery.

Saw the negative terminal/connector arcing and heard it loud zap.

FD started fine and now I have 10 airbag light flash.

Time to search the classifieds for a '94 airbag diagnostic module!

mightymikee,

Sorry to hear about your air bag problem. Are you sure the battery is fully charged and does not have a bad cell? A bad battery cell may cause some freaky electrical issues to include popping Air Bag codes. My FC had a similar issue and the battery was the culprit. You could remove and inspect the module for any bad components. Regarding a replacement Air Bag module, please refer to the classified section.

I should thank you for the comment and you are probably right about it being intermittent code as I have to report that somehow the code is no longer appearing. Since then, instead of unhooking the battery, I keep it on and just keep the car on the battery tender.

Hey guys,
does any one possibly know where I can get an airbag module? Mine flashed 3 times checked everything and it came to just replacing it. But it looks good, nothing is burnt or blown so it doesn’t make any sense.
please let me know!
thank you
