I have a 93 yellow R1 and am trying to decide if it is worth selling. The motor is out (however, I have an all NEW Pettit street ported motor< paid $5200.00). I also have a new in box ACT clutch($500.00) and PFS mgt to go on. The car also has an Apexi cat back and less than a thousand miles on the cross drilled rotors, pads, BBS rims and Perelli P Zero's. Over all the car is pretty nice. It does have some clear coat peeling on the nose, passenger door, and the wing. Worst point is the drivers door got crunched when someone put it on a hoist (needs door skin, not a huge deal) and the turbo' are not good.

I've been screwed over by the last two people who have gone to work on it. To the tune of losing over $4000.00.

I realize these cars are rare, but I'd like to know at this point what the car should be worth as it sits. The economy is killing me.

if you have the new motor why not just put it in and keep it? you already spent the money, and you wont get back what you spent in the car. make sure it runs properly then just over time save up for a new paint job,.

 

If you're after the max amount of money for what you've put in, you're going to have to install the motor and square the car away.

 

Without chassis miles it is impossible to guess with any accuracy.

Peeling clear coat is a huge negative - once is starts, it does not stop.

Damaged door is an even bigger negative; fix it before you even try to sell.

With the engine installed and property running, fixed and repainted door, and with, say, 100k chassis miles I'd guess around $12k.

If I had the cash to fix it, I'd just keep it. And, there's a good possibility that is what I'll do. I've really just had some tough times as of late. Not to mention, trying to get this thing running has cost a ton and I'm still without a motor in the car.

I'd post in the Regional section to get some recommendations to a trust worthy rotary specialist in your area or make friends with some locals to help you get the motor in and back together.

 

Take some pictures of all the bad area's and post it up, that can help out. To me I think cym worht more than an ordaniry fd over because ot it's color, If u deceide to sell it as a roller I think it worth 7,900 to 11,000 only if it has low miles and clean title and near mint body.

 

you can probably sell it as a package (Maybe get $6-8K) but like everyone else already said you will get much more for a running car (Approx. $10-12K). how is the interior? I am also assuming that it has a clean title.

 

Put the car back together and save it for when the economy is out of the crapper. Then you will be able to make some really good money. After all you do have the best model/color combo.

 

if only i was on the market for a CYM now i would nab this up and fix it myself.

The car running with the current paint issues is an $11-13K car, with good fresh paint it is worth about $16-17k in the current market. Take that info into consideration if it is worth it to fix or not.

 

For what it's worth: I have an original R1 CYM with only a few suspension mods - some Koni shocks, a big front sway bar - and a Racing Beat cat back. It has a handful under 60,000 miles. It runs fine, and only needs the pan gasket redone; the paint is okay, with only a little road rash on the rocker panels but no dents or rust issues, and the interior is clean. Engine, turbos, ECU, everything else is original and stock, I was quoted $7800 by an appraiser for my insurance company. Don't count on it being worth a bunch of money, after all it is nearly 17 years old.

Bought mine 12 years ago off the local Porsche dealer's lot in 1998 for $17,500 - it had 41,400 miles on it at the time.

 

Sorry to hear you are in a pickle...but seriously, you'd be best off NOT considering selling it right now, in the condition it is in. With a just a little more time and effor (and NOT a lot of money) you will have a car worth MUCH more than the sum of its parts....as it stands (or sits!) right now.

Sadly, you describe what it happening more and more as these cars age. The once-mighty FD is becoming a mere shadow of its former self. Basic grocery-getters from Mazda, Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, etc are capable of equal or better 0 - 60 times, with modern interiors and advanced features. Finding a really NICE FD is harder and harder to do....and as they fall out of the limelight, they are becoming far less desirable. When TFATF came out, the cars enjoyed a momentary resurgence in popularity, as every ricer kid in the world who'd never heard of one suddenly had to HAVE one....while not knowing anything about them. Once the glamour wears off, the sad reality IS that these cars are 15 years old and require a lot of upkeep, far more than compared to 'lesser' cars that can be had for much less of an investment.

I dont think his comment was a "I'll sell the car for $8k"... If I followed him correctly - the car will not be valued as a $15k (or whatever it would sell for on the forums) to an insurance company unless additional insurance was taken out on the car. If thats correct... wow, what a crappy company/agent.

I was paid over $12k for an R1 with over 180k miles on it... however it was the stock engine (believe it or not).

 

You're right, it's not for sale. I was getting an appraisal for replacement costs and value in case it was damaged. As it stands now, if it were to be damaged and the repair bills came to more than $4700 (any fender bender would be more than that) the insurance company would total it out.

 

that's a crock of ****, go talk to them and show them what similar cars in similar condition are selling for. When my first FD had an engine fire I managed to get 14k from the insurance *****, then I bought the car back for 1400 dollars, pulled everything that I could out of it, and sold it to a guy that wanted an LSx race car.
Don't let the insurance company screw you over. It's a rarer car, make sure they're aware of this if you get hit, MAKE THEM fix it.

 

That's the way the insurance biz works. They compare all available like models - options, mileage, condition, etc. - in the greater metro area where you live and base their replacement costs on that. Unfortunately, the few FDs that have sold around here have all gone for less than $8000.

If I want a higher value/replacement cost on the car - what they call "agreed value" I'd have to go to a specialty insurance company like Haggerty that covers rare collector cars and the like. There I could set my own value - in conjunction with the company - but they have some pretty strick limits before they'll cover a car: very low annual usage (I think it's around 1500 miles/year last time I checked), car must be kept in a closed, secure gargage, stuff like that; and they won't cover every car, it's up to them whether it's a classic, rare, or collector car.

That's probably why you see so many FDs for sale on ebay with salvage titles, cost to repair them far exceeds the insured value.

 

Get proper collectors insurance and have your car insured for agreed value.... then you get what you agreed it is worth...

 

As I said, I've looked into that. There are some very strict restrictions as to what they will cover and how you use and store the car. Has to be less than 1500 miles a year, and what killed it for me - no licensed drivers under the age of 18 in the household (I have 2). I also would have to pay for an appraisal by someone they recommend, on their list of approved appraisers, and could take an average of 3 different appraisals as the highest "agreed Value". They do, however, use collector and specialty car appraisers rather than used car appraisers.

 

this is very accurate, its worth low teens with all the parts, but put together and repainted it will be about 17k. by the time you put it together and paint it thought the economy should do better, so i say stick it out, put the work and extra money (you already handled the big job with the motor) for the turbos and painting, and enjoy your car for a while and sell it when the economy eventually comes around
