1993 Mazda Rx7 20,614 Original Miles

I just bought this Black RX7 with 20,614 original miles. The car came with a complete full blown Greddy Exhaust, down pipes, and mid pipes. Thats all. I paid $24,000 for it with shipping to NJ. I just sold my 2001 BMW M5 because of too many electrical problems so decided on this wicked looking machine. The car is pretty fast, and gets looks like people have no clue. Way more than the M5. People just looked at the M5 like they knew it already but with this they wonder! This wouldn't compete with the M5 thats why Im asking this question. My whole goal is to get enough power while keeping the engine cool and free from headaches. I want it to be reliable so I was told one thing to buy the Fluidyne radiator which I did and run Redline Syntech. I want more out of it and am reluctant to knowing what to do. My spending limit write now is $5000 and want the best out of this machine. I would like to be in around 320 rear wheel Power. I just did order the Apexi ECU which came from the Rx7 store and is pregrommed to meet up with my exhaust system. Should I do intake? WHich one would be the best? What else? What else to get this machine up to 320 rear wheel without a single turbo. I want to keep the TT's. Any help would be much appreciated with this. Thanks for looking and hopefully understanding me.

Do not (WOT) WIDE OPEN THROTTLE aka FLOOR IT.

until you get a ECU to increase FUEL..

you asking for a BLOWN MOTOR with full exhaust with no fuel
delivery upgrade.. Thats a FACT Jack...

BTW: my buddy has a 02 or 03 M5.

I spank him so bad.. Its not even fair.

To be honest with you.
You probably can " FLOOR IT, and keep it FLOORED" WOT
a couple of times and be FINE..
BUT it only takes ONE SPIKE or ONE CREEP and " PING"
Blown motor.. Who ever put a full exhaust
DP/MP/CB on their FD with out at the least putting in
a ECU to increase fuel, was retarded..

Does your FD, even have a boost gauge or intake??

He's saying don't go full throttle until iyou nstall the ecu. You won't need to upgrade the fuel sysem for 320. With the addition of an upgraded intercooler and an intake to your open exhaust and Apexi ecu you should be able to hit 320 at around 12-14 pounds of boost.

ECU and at least a new fuel pump to accompany it would be smart. You can buy drop in (no addl modding) for a couple hundred. He's saying that you have almost no back pressure and your motor will spin way too free. This will lead to detonation (BAD) without a good air/fuel mix.

If you sold your M5 only because of electrical problems, you are in for a treat with the FD.

I'll try to do that now. I have them on the computer and tried before but the size was too large. I'll try again to decrease the size first. Its pretty sweet. Thanks for the help.

you have 5 grand to spend? find a reputable rotary mechanic around you, get an intake, upgrade your intercooler, get an aluminum AST (air separator tank), and have them dyno tune your PFC. with those mods, you *should* (don't quote me on this, because i'm not an expert) get between 300 and 320 WHP.

Question, doesn't the ECU come preprogrammed for any mods I do. I bought an APEXI unit for $900.. Thanks

^NO! Don't take it to a Mazda mechanic. For the most part, installing an intake, aluminum AST, intercooler, and ECU is reasonably easy and you can DIY. They truly are "bolt-ons". You won't be able to tune it so perhaps you'll want to go for a little ways of a drive one weekend for that and then you're set. Please don't take it to a Mazda Dealership. They don't know **** about Rx-7s.

DUDE..

Look in the NE FORUM section.

there is a thread with LIST of all kinda mechanics/shops in NE.
and there like a alot in NJ.. as a matter of fact..
They are organizing a TUNING session with STEVE Kan (consider one of the top tuners)
in NJ, like next month..

and BTW.. Make your TURBOS NON Sequential.. You can do the poor man non sequential
and its nothning more than switching the PFC and switching some solenoids..

BTW..
who can blame him for rather having a FD than a M5.
FD's are one of the best looking cars ever made, and done right
will run circles around anything.. and is it me or DO the NEW BMW's front end
look PONTIACish and rear end look CHRYSLER STRATUSish.

Welcome aboard. You have a lot to learn....

Couple of warnings for you:

1. There are a few Rotary specialists in the area. Scroll down to the bottom of the main forum index and click into the NE section and go through the thread on local mechanics. Or you could click the search button and search for it. I promise you that you will get raped at the Mazda dealer and that they will **** up working on your car. Unlike BMW dealers, Mazda dealers never quite figured out how to work on and fix the turbo powered rotaries - especially the FD.

2. Be careful when modding the 7 or you will blow your motor so quick you'll be dumbfounded. I had a BMW before my FD as well and modding the 7 is much more complicated than the BMW. The 7 easily goes into a lean condition if you open up the exhaust and intake w/o compensating for fuel in the right places. I can almost guarantee you that you will blow you motor running a full exhaust (downpipe and midpipe) possibly even with a Power FC unless you get it professionally tuned. Do you want to risk dropping $4+k into a new motor to find out?

Do yourself and your wallet a favor and spend some time reading the FAQs and the links to Scuderia and Robinette's site and learn a little about the car b4 you waste a lot of $$ on things you will regret.

Do you still have the stock 10-8-10 boost pattern? Just because the miles are low doesn't mean that everything is working as it should. The original components on the engine are still 10+ years old. Things get brittle with age. Do a 3rd gear pull from 40mph till the rpm's past 6k and check your boost pattern. The car needs to be in proper running condition before modifing. Also check/change your fuel filter and plugs. I wouldn't be suprised that with only 20k miles you may still have the originals in place.
