1992 JDM RX-7 Twin Turbo
Hi guys,
I'm looking to buy a '92 JDM right hand drive RX-7 from a local importer that imports cars from Japan. I went for a ride in the car yesterday (didn't ask to drive it as I wasn't serious about the car at that point), and everything seemed to be working well.
The car has 110,000 km on the clock, and the engine was rebuilt 45,000 km ago. The car has some race tuning done to the engine I think, but nothing serious. No boost controllers, turbo timer, no aftermarket exhaust. The car has a carbon fiber hood, some black rims (not sure of make, not a huge fan of them) and a body kit. It has been repainted purple (from that green colour). Interior is stock except for a racing steering wheel. Engine looked clean.
I'm wondering what I need to look/hear for when test driving the car and inspecting it. I'm able to get a good deal on the car, and the dealer selling it seems legit (friend dealt with him last year regarding an R32 he was looking at).
Thanks for all the help in advance!!

What sort of information do you think the FAQ contains? Discussions about neon underlighting? Please read it:

Besides looking at the links in the FAQ on buying an FD, I would get the information on exactly what has been done to the car. What mods have been performed? What, if anything, can he tell you about the engine rebuild?

can you road register this? there seems to be alot of people on this forum who purchase JDM rx7's then find they cant register it..may want to be sure you can before you buy it.

^^ +10 .. ditto on the engine compression test and ALSO, coolant pressure test. Try to find a rotary mechanic to take it too for inspection and checkup. If no one is close, learn as much as you can (read, read) before you spend any $$$$...
And since you're in Canada, you might want to look at importing an FD from a later year, say 1999 or later. Here in the US, we can't really import FD's that well, otherwise, I would have bought a 2002 Spirit R for suuure.
Good luck.

I'm in the process of buying my first FD as well, have been for a few months. Read the faq thread first. Then if you have any more questions people always seem more then willing to help around here.
This isn't a car you can just get in and drive. You have to be meticulous with routine maintenance, if you do then it'll treat you well but can still give you tons of problems.
The FD is a great car for sure, but you shouldn't have one as your dd.
Advice that is always given to me is "Always have $4-5000 on hand for when the engine blows".
