13b-rew turbo swap

hey guys i got a question, my stock twin turbos have a problem, sometimes it boosts, sometimes it doesn't. sometimes the 1st turbo boosts and after 4000 the 2nd one wont boost and vice versa.
anyways i got a spare set of twin turbos and i wanna change them but people tell me i gotta lift up the engine to do so, is it true or not?
have anyone changed their turbos without removing the engine ?
if so, how hard is it on a scale from 1 to 10.

thanks

Sequential boost problems like you're describing are often related to the twin turbo control system (solenoids, vacuum lines, or wiring), not usually the turbochargers themselves. Do some searching, read through the FAQ's... try looking for 'turbo control troubleshooting' or 'sequential troubleshooting'. It's not exactly a simple system... once you understand how all the components work together there are still quite a few vacuum lines that could cause problems.

It's definitely possible to change the turbochargers without removing the engine. You will probably need to lift the car further from the ground (jack-stands or ramps should work) to access some of the components from below.

Scale of 1-to-10 depends on your experience/background and tools available. I don't think it's very easy... probably 5-to-7 at least. Search around... there are at least a few how-to's either on this site or links in the 3rd Gen FAQ section. The Mazda factory service manual is also a great tool. When I swapped my twin-turbos I used the FSM and the how-to's for reference.

Not an exact "how-to", but it gives you the gist of what needs to happen:

IIRC, your car is RHD so you may have a few more headaches than what I listed.

Just swapped my turbos. Its possible with the engine still in the car, but I had to unbolt one motor mount and jack one side of the motor up in order to take off the Downpipe/Remove the turbos from the engine bay. There just wasn't enough space otherwise.

The whole ordeal was pretty frustrating. I'd say 8.5 out of 10.

On a more positive note, your symptoms don't sound like the turbochargers are the problem. Check the other parts of the turbo system first before you go removing the turbos.
