Lightbulb vacuum system

Have you thought about the vacuum control system?

I'd suspect it long before the turbos themselves. I.E. the solenoids, rubber hoses, actuators, rat's nest, etc.

Besides ... the second turbo is hardly used compared to the primary.

I have 127K on my turbos and I have recently experienced the same 'one time' problem - at the drag strip no less. Power degraded over the course of three runs to the point that I got a 17.5!! Car temps were normal the whole time. Oddly, the car seemed to run normally on the way home?

After getting home, I tightened an IC hose clamp that may have been a little loose. Everything since then seems normal.

I've just installed a boost guage in hopes of more convincingly identifying boost problems in the future.

Doesn't sound like the turbo is bad. James probably has it right. Check the turbo control system, do a search on boost problems.

I have a theory, the stock turbos actually last a long time. It's the engines that have a short life.

Last thing, how do you know the turbos are original? Are you the original owner? Records since new? Take your VIN # to Mazda and they can do a warranty search on your car. Lots of cars had turbos replaced under warranty, sellers don't always disclose this due to embarrassment.

that Avatar is cool enough that I may have to steal it ... hope you don't mind.

Agree with Jeff, the turbos generally last longer unless abused. When they go, you will have no boost at all, or your car will be smoky like hell at start up I presume.

When my primary went it made some awful grinding noise and I blew clouds of blue smoke. Turbo failure generally means a bit more than lack of power.
The turbos I put in I bought off somebody for $250, they had 110k miles on them and I have already put 30k more. My turbos have 2x the milage of my car.
