Traditionally, 10w40 has had a higher ash count in the past so it was not recommended for rotary engines. People typically use 10w30 or 20w50. The manual recommends 10w30.

10w40 is perfectly fine to use.
My JDM Efini RX7 owner's manual lists 10w30 and 10w40 as recommended oils. I'm currently running Castrol GTX 10w40.

There were some old tests back around 2000-1 time frame which showed some of the additives being used in the 10w40 oils were leaving deposits. I'm sure things have changed since then as lubrication technology has gotten better all around; but I stick with what I know isn't going to cause too much internal deposits.

FWIW, I did use 10w40 for a while with my old engine (mostly because I didn't know better). Even with track days where I was flogging the car, I had a lot of carbon build up on the rotors when the engine blew. I'm not saying 10w40 killed my motor, but now I'm more careful about what products I use.

I've heard many different types to use from syn. to petroleum based oils, like some of the other guys I didn't know that about the 10w-40 oils though. Ray from PFS said a 10w-40 would be fine but I did read something somewhere about the carbon build up that accumulates over time with that type oil that Majhik mentioned I don't know its completely true or not, but it seems plausible. I was just wondering about it. I hope that more people will post to maybe shed some more light on the subject.

I've been using synthetic since 2001, 20w50 in warmer months and 10w30 in cooler months. Idemitsu is my current choice. I also stay away from 10w40 based on the reason Kyle alluded to and also from talking to rotary gurus over the years.....

Both. For motor break in, I use non-synthetic 10w30. After break in, I use synthetic oils for the car.

Gotta question for Majhik and GoodFella if you're running petroleum based 10w-40 and 2 cycle oil in the tank would it be wise to switch up using a syn 10w-30 and 2 cycle oil together for the winter and continue using until summer months then switching it up to 20w-50 . Reason I asked is I used petroleum to break in the motor and planned on continued use, but now I'm reconsidering it reconsidering.

I think you might be a little too worried about it.

Here's what I use:

regular dyno oil for breakin
idemitsu premix
idemitsu synthetic 10w30 in cold months
idemitsu synthetic 20w50 in warm months

I use Castrol 10w30 for break in, and then Royal Purple 10w30. I do use Royal Purple 20w50 but only for summer track days.
