*serious question* for those who have blown stock twins

I've heard a metal on metal sound for a week or so instead of the normal vssssszzzzzzz sound. There is an occasional pop of black smoke when I shift that comes out the catback. I don't constantly smell burning oil, by any means. I felt the shaft play, and they're rubbing a bit.

I did just go non-seq a couple of weeks ago as well, but I doubt that caused it in any way.

Any idea how long they'll be around if this just started? Anything I can do to make them last through the revolution (and all of the hard driving they'll receive while I'm there)?

thanks,

-BN

I've heard that they're spinning at 120,000rpm, which would lead me to believe that they would grind themselves down in an instant.

It doesn't sound like the normal woosh, though--something is rubbing.

RUBBING- metal to metal = metal being feed to the rotors , and you are still running them. Shame on you .

You make a good point, however;

If the turbos are going out, then they're probably feeding oil into the IC, and a good portion of those tiny dust-like pieces of metal are getting caught up in that oil.

has anyone experienced a slight 'rough' sound with the turbos before they went out?

I have a sound coming from mine too, i tried to get answers, but it's a tough sound to describe.

Is yours a constant grinding, or intermittent? what rpm does it start at??

Mine is intermittent, and starts around 5500rpm or so.

I can't tell if it's metal on metal, or vacuum hose coming loose at full boost?

I chewed blades off mine once before. Which is what your doing now,
Your risking blowing metal chunks into your engine driving it with those turbos on there. The bades are getting chipped off and are proabbly floating around in your Intercooler right about now.
It's your call but If i were you i would stop driving the cart immediately and remove those turbos.

The best way for me to bescribe the sounds was, at first it sounded like a whistle/ loud spoolin. Then it gradually got worse until one day it was full out metal scrapping sounds. Like you stuck a tin can into a fan or something. At the very least you should pull off the primary and secondary inlet elbows to inspect for damaged blades.

sorry to hear about your turbos. I thought you said you had an extra set of twins lying around. I remember you tried to sell them to me at the last NOPI. If you don't have them anymore, you can pick up a set for really cheap on thepartstrader.com right now. I would be happy to help you put them in.
