R1, r2 r3?
I've been looking into the 1995 Model year, car by car, mostly because with only 500 or so cars, its possible. I'm looking at 1985 as well, but they made 500 Rx7's a day back then, so it will take much much longer.
anyways, we know the 93 is an R1, and the 94 is an R2, but is the 1995 an R3? the parts fish says R3. the other thing that is jumping out at me is that i do not see Canada listed. we know there were some, so this remains a puzzle.
see attached
the other thing is that the 1995 R package may have been available in more colors than just silver, black and red

distinctly recall when i test drove an 95 SSM R in the late nineties that the dealership referred to it as R3
it stuck in my mind as it was presented to me as an R3 after having also test driven a 94 R2 prior...
and the distinction was made between the two after having asked the difference..
interesting that the parts fiche shows R3

The red arrow is obscuring the last regional box, is that Guan & Saipan? Weird how Mazda would continue the R2 designation there but use R3 in the US. That makes no sense..but its Mazda. Also, is it possible that mazda changed their mind after this was created? The reason I think that is because the RX8 R3. Seems like mazda backtracked on calling it an R3 and that left R3 available for the RX8 many years later.

also notice that Guam got a run of cars built after the last US cars.

I have a 95 Mazda USA RX-7 dealer brochure and it clearly says "R2 package" in it. The picture when you first open the brochure is a black '95 R2 and it says "With R2 package" on the page.
They may have talked about calling it an R3 behind the scenes but didn't go through with it. Everything I've ever heard and seen is R2, that's it.

i apologize for being abrupt, but you have to realize that i have a piece of factory documentation and you do not.
there is a company called ACES and they provide the database for all of the year/make/model/sub-model/etc for every car in America. they have a lot of stuff wrong, and IF you have some documentation they might look into it. if you just say, naw its a yyz and not xxx they ignore you.
the funny one is the miata. on teh internets we think of the 90-97 cars as NA, the 99-05 cars as NB and the 06-15 as NC, and the 16-18 as ND.
they have the 99-05 cars as blank, NC or NE depending on the year. we know this is wrong, but prove it. there is nowhere on the car where it says NB.
i do go round and round with my boss about this stuff. the aftermarket wants to go year/make/model/sub-model as i'm sure you've noticed at a big chain store. this is fine when your pickup has a 6 foot sticker on it that says FX4 on the side. the problem, as usual, is Mazda. one of our guys bought a 2018 Mazda 3, and i put the Vin into the EPC and for model it says "BEES"
to get the submodel on a newer Mazda you need the 1. window sticker, or 2. run the warranty history in Mazda's computer.

i've decided to leave it be, just because they are also missing the Canadian models. our computer goes through the catalog, and sorts by submodel weekly, so its actually better for everyone if the submodels are just completely missing.
for the record the Canadian NB MIatae are GS, GX and GT.

1) ACES is not a company. It's a data standard.
2) The VCdb (Vehicle Configuration Database) is the specific database that contains the vehicle info (Year/Make/Model).
3) I agree it has a lot of stuff wrong. But it's a living document continuously updated, so many issues get amended as they are identified.
4) It doesn't have the RX-7s wrong. For the 1993-1995 it has a Base model and a Touring submodel, which is correct. For 1993 is has an R1 submodel. For 1994-1995 is has an R2 submodel.
5) The only R3 submodel is for the 2009-2011 RX-8, which I believe is also accurate.
Here's a quick screen shot from an Excel export of the VCdb:
If you ever need any help on this stuff, let me know. It's what I've done (besides play with RX-7s) for the past 12+ years.
