If I were truly thinking about selling the FD it would be for one of two reasons. Both of which have to do with money. Either I didn't have enough to support my family or the repairs that you don't have to do to a newer car(interior,exterior and other old stuff that just breaks)were killing the enjoyment of the car because of the cost that a newer car just doesn't have (yet). Because I'm not spending money on making it faster. Just keeping it at the status quo.

That being said, a c6z is a KILLER car for the money right now. The c7z with the better interior when it's 8 years old will be damned hard to beat.

Both C6 and C7 are too heavy and too ugly for me not to mention too many electronic bells and whistles to totally go tits up at some time :)

Honestly, this is looking like Mazda is going in a good direction. The new Miata looks great, will likely drive great and is like 2200lbs! I would say the new Miata is arguably the best looking car Mazda has made since the FD.

I say all Mazda has to do is make it a little bigger, add a turbo v6 and a hard top, sell it for $30k and make a lot of people happy. It's not a rotary, but, I think that might be done... we can all keep are 7's for that...

The only think I could see myself selling my FD for is a R34 GTR. If money was no object the list would go on and on! I love this car but if someone wanted to trade me straight up for even a R33 GTR I would take them up on it.

I can see why. A 1.5L SkyActiv engine helps their fleet emissions and fuel economy targets. It's possible that they plan to offer a turbo version later, as well as a 2.0L equivalent.

Honda has been getting 200+ hp out of 2.0L for a while, so Mazda should be capable of something similar. They've been stuck at about 170-180 hp for a long time, including the old Mazdaspeed turbo.

The stingray shares alot of similarity with our beloved FD I feel..
It shares i feel very similar body lines obviously not anywhere as curvy or elegant but very much like a slightly larger more angular /aggressive look.

And the biggest reason would be the interior...

I absolutely love the FDs interior for how tailored for the driver it is..almost like the driver is in his/her own cockpit where everything wraps from left to right around them ..
If you look at the new stingray it is so so very much the same styling /design.
It completely encloses the driver and that is by far my favorite part of driving my FD how much a part of the car you feel when sitting in it.

The 1st time I saw the BRZ I said to myself not bad, that's a cute little sports car.

The 1st time I saw the FD I thought HOLY SH#T WTF is this it's got to be the coolest sports car I've ever seen and still pretty much feel the same way today :nod:

After giving up two FDs, I'm never giving another FD up again. Just picked one up and its under going a bit of an overhaul atm. Planning on picking another one up and just so I can have two:lol:

Agreed! As far as I am concerned, the FD is irreplaceable, which is why I have my two now also that I will be keeping. I am just looking at what else is out there to someday add to the fleet. It's hard to find something comparable.

I love my FD, and no, I don't want to trade it. But I would add to the stable (mind you I have never driven one), one of these. I don't even like Ford, but this car is pretty sweet. I have always liked the Porsche GT2 as well.

Maybe I missed it, but I am surprised that no one has suggested an Alfa Romeo 4C. I am on their waiting list for one, however I really don't think I care to replace my dear FD RX-7. I DD a C6 Z06, but the FD is still my favorite sports car.

I guess I would also add that the 4C seems to me to be a cutting edge sports car at the high end of affordability just as the FD was when it was introduced. Probably as fragile also :)

^ The Ford GT is #1 on the "when I hit the lotto" list. Don't really think you can say it would be an FD replacement just because its about impossible to touch one for under 200k. I do find it interesting that alot of us only consider modern "supercars" as replacements for the FD. Maybe its us being a bit delusional as owners, or maybe the car really is that good. Probably a combination of the two :D. I posted in this thread a while back, and now a bit later my answers havent changed much. Ive driven an NSX, loved it and would love to have one. It does need a bit more power, and the price of entry and mods is just a bit too high for me, considering what you are getting. Ive always had a thing for Vipers, and have lately fallen in love with the new ones. I realize they are still very expensive cars and maybe in the same "not really fair to compare" class, but I do think I may have to have one of these someday. I think they are sort of a no compromise car, in a similar way to the FD. While the FD made no compromises for the sake of weight savings and sharp handing, the viper makes no compromises for the purpose of just being in your face and over the top. I think the new ones are a nice combination of the beautiful style of the Gen 1-2 and the chassis and suspension of the gen 3-4 , with a nice interior. I'm not sure how the newer vipers compare, but, i've always avoided the thought of buying one because i've heard that like their name, they will bite you if you make a mistake.

One of the reasons I LOVE the FD is because of how easy it is to handle on the edge. Make a small error and fix it with a small correction. I've heard small errors in the viper put you in the wall or worse over the cliff! All of the early Gumball 3000's i remember hearing about one viper crash after the other.

To be clear, I do not want to change - if I did buy a new car however:

In terms of sheer driving experience
- Lotus Exige 220PS
- Ferrari 458 Scuderia
- Porche 911 GT3

In terms of practicality, driving experience & acquisition cost
- EVO X
- EVO IX

In terms of raw outright performance
- Nissan GT-R

I'm not a fan of the Alfa looks or the little turbo engine but love the carbon tub etc.....

4 years later since this thread was started and I still havent given up my FD. Ive had other cars along the way but still none compare. I've started considering a GTR(back seats for my kids) and I go back and forth on if I would ever pull the trigger on a highly modded 996 911 Turbo(Back seats but the 997 just looks so much better), I just dont think I can do it. I tried a 500rwhp E55 for a year, great car but no real thrill factor, and handling doesn't compare to its BMW counterpart. The BMWs I just dont trust(owned many). Supra prices are so unrealistic at this point its comical. Gen II vipers are a more expensive FD, still uncomfortable and not pleasurable to cruise in.

Anything I would be willing to "give up" my FD for is in Super Car territory, and while I have been fortunate I'm not on that level. Ill likely end up in another T-Rex(07+ this time for the fuel injection), keep the FD and my SUV to run the kids in. I tell myself I need to find another car to love like the FD, its just not there under $100k.

I just looked one up for the first time. With the HP and Weight its similar to a stock FD. Would be interesting to see the potential of the engine, if it was capable of 300-350rwhp like the FD it would probably be a great modern day equivalent. Not sure I love the looks but like the direction they are going with it. :icon_tup:

My mom had an Alfa Romeo Spider when I was a kid...I learned how to drive in it. It was a fun little car, cornered like it was on rails, and it sounded - dare I say - better than my dad's 911. It was a serious POS too though. Constantly breaking down leaving us stranded.

lol She sold it for a Jaguar, in true glutton for punishment form.

Hit the Cars and Coffee-Aliso Viejo edition today and by the far the biggest attention grabber(I'm in this group) was the Ford GT.. Absolutely beautiful; exterior, interior, sound etc. an all round 10 of a car. The new Lambo Huracan(3 today) was a standout that i think looks way better in person than in photos.
