Driving 48 States in Two Mazda FD RX7s – Gears and Gasoline
Wow – a long run , Part I
The idea of outracing winter is very familiar to us Canadians. It probably would have been more much more pleasant in stock FDs or RX-8s.
Running the K-swap FD on that gearing with such a long journey is painful.
The ideal chase car for this trip would be a Prius, right?

I'm baffled why the rotary car is getting such crap fuel economy. I can get 22mpg all day long on the highway without doing anything drastic, cruise control at 75 mph.
The K-swap FD should get way better fuel economy with a different rear end for sure.

Because of all the hooning lol
Lots of flame spitting for entertainment. His tune may also not be optimized for highway. The car was already set up the way it was when he got it. As far as the me (the viewing audience) goes, he's never done anything with the tune

It was an interesting vid that popped up in my youtube recommendations. Not as annoying as some of the other channels, clearly they don’t really know anything too mechanical of the vehicles. They just Take them to shops and let them figure it out. That being said, it wasn’t a vid I had to skip ahead at all. Actually watched it at normal speed (a rarity with YouTube vids of this nature..)
Well put together considering it’s still just a YouTube vid.
The kswap isn’t a rotary anymore and I feel sorry for the vehicle. But to each their own
the other one still has hope. It desperately needs to get tuned because it’s burning fuel at an alarming rate. I make slightly more power and can get 470-500km’s out of a tank without really trying. Granted, if I’m always on boost and “spitting flames” then I’ll be getting 320-360km’s out of a tank (I call a tank anything going to a smidge below the quarter mark. It never goes below that). Gotta get rid of that massive wing too. A whole ton of drag coming out of that thing.
interested to see what the 2nd episode is going to be...

Yes, I thought the mileage was suspiciously low from the rotary FD, but it's probably down to the tune.
In my opinion, they should have set up softer suspensions and swapped to touring tires and stockish tire profiles, but it looks like they didn't have time to do a bunch of things beforehand.
In retrospect, it might have been cool if they could have analyzed the gas quality, etc. while they were visiting so many gas stations. It would make for an interesting comparison.

I know there’s 1 state I would never live in. What kind of crazy state won’t let you pump your own gas?! Ridiculous.
We’ll what comes of episode 2..

The analyzing gas quality would be pretty neat. In Florida my gas mileage would stay pretty consistent year round, but here in New Jersey the summer and winter blend gives me different mileage in the Mazda 3. I was kind of put off with not being able to pump my own gas when I moved up here a year ago, but not being outside when it's freezing is a plus haha.

They make well produced videos but I've noticed they keep spreading misinformation, which is really unfortunate because of their popularity it will have lasting effects. First why all the premixing on a street driven 360HP FD with a working OMP? Talk about overkill while making it seem owning a rotary is such a hassle. Never mind the lousy gas mileage. I'm with Dale as I too get much better gas mileage.
Also the K-engine guy in his swap videos keeps preaching that his K engine weighs in at ~275lbs (I forget the exact figure) while the rotary weighs 400lbs. Except we know the FD rotary engine (13B) actually weighs 250lbs but it has 150lbs of turbo accessories that make it to be 400lbs. Yes that is all fine and dandy, except that he only reports the weight of his K engine WITHOUT the turbo accessories that his car ALSO has. Quite convenient..

Buddy of mine spotted the rotary FD's air fuel was like 13's in one shot, most likely that's the whole issue, cruising AFR's not tuned.
Can't imagine going down the interstate for hours, looking at those AFR's, and just going "oh well". Come on dude.
I can understand the **** use of premix - I've known guys that are SUPER picky about doing it, just the right amount, etc. Also for a new owner that doesn't have a lot of experience he's thinking he's helping things out. Yeah, premix can help, but damn .

I'm deep to high 14's at cruise.
While I was watching the video, my wife happened to walk by while he was asking the guy at the pump about adding premix. She was a bit confused since I don't add anything and the way I explained it was that it provides extra lubrication to reduce excessive wear on the seals. Except that for a street driven car it is not that advantageous because it is not under constant load like a track car and most likely the engine will first go due to carbon build up, a water seal going, or just plain old fashioned detonation since it is modified (I've been talking her ear off about rotaries for 20+ years so she understands lol). She related it to never having a drink to avoid any kind of liver damage only to end up dying of some genetic pre disposition. Basically in the end something is going to get you... It always does.

It's fine. They seem like nice enough guys that are genuinely drawn to and enjoy the platform (which is neat) and I really appreciate their earnest yet modest approach to content production as well as how they represent themselves; as opposed to your typical youtuber egomaniac. But the content in this video, overall, is pretty boring.

I stopped when I saw the kswap. There was only one FD in that video . Youtubers give rotary cars such a bad name sometimes. Especially the ones that just pick the cars up in non-operating condition (lol not this video but some guy just picked up an rx8 and was bashing it from the start).

I forget, one of the 7stock years this really really tall fellow arrived in an FD. I think he was 6'8 or 6'9... Till this day I have never seen anyone fold themselves up like a pretzel to get into a car... LOL!! It was the funniest, but also the most interesting to see when he got into and out of his FD..
