Dahsboard dispalys nothing when car is running

Hello,

On my 1996 fd, the dashboard displays nothing useful when the car is running, no tach, no speed, no odo. Only fuel seems to be somewhat working, both water temp and oil pressure gauges are on 0 with the warning lights on. I have both aftermarket gauges and a power fc, so I don't mind those not working correctly. The backlight, as well as the functions indicators work fine (parking break, heat,...).

My ecu gets an rpm value, which seems correct, but speed shows 0 on the pfc commander. I have two refurbished dashboards, that work correctly for sure, and my old dashboard that has a jumpy tachometer. On all of them, the issue is the exact same.

When only the contact is on, the odometer works fine. What I have noticed, is as soon as more current is drawn, the odometer stops working and displays nothing. For example, turning the headlights on, or running the fans and operating the windows at the same time cause the odometer to dim a little bit and display nothing.

As far as electrical mods go on my car, I have done the fuel pump relay modification, the fan switch, as well as an uprated alternator. I am using an odyssey 680 dry cell battery.
Using the fan switch also kills the odometer.

It may be worth pointing out that when turning anything that causes the odometer to go blank back off does not return the odometer to a functioning state. Removing the contact does, however it sometimes needs a couple tries.

I am at a loss, as I don't know why none of my dashboards work, showing the exact same issues, or what might be causing this to happen. No current goes to my reverse lights either, while nothing has been touched in that area. I have replaced the reverse switch with a brand new one, but to no avail. I can see from the ecu however, that the car recognizes when reverse is in gear.

I will appreciate any lead, no matter how minute it may seem.
Thank you in advance, I hope I have provided the necessary information.

Cluster problems sometimes can be attributed to certain ground not being attached.

Check the 2~4 grounds related to the dash and firewall harness. And all the other grounds, such as the UIM to firewall ground.

(Also if you have a "96 JDM watch out that Mazda changed the position of the coils starting in late 1995. This is not related to your immediate issue. But watch out regardless.)

What wiring diagrams are you using? There were other changes to the wiring, so the wire colours may vary in later models.

@Akagi'sWhiteComet is producing an English language version of the JDM wiring manuals.

You may need to trace where some of your wires have got crossed.

Sometime DIY types take power from wires leading from the ignition. When the ignition is turned power may be drawn away from other circuits.
