Confirmation Needed: Rx8 s2 Fans High Speed Inputs

Switching my fans back to Mazda Rx8 S2 fans.

My build does not use the 3 staged speeds and the FD specific relays.

For high speed function…

Should both the black and yellow wires be grounded and both the blue and green wires tied to 12volt?

I'm not familiar with the wire colors, but grounding both grounds and sending 12V to both 12V inputs would get max fan speed for the FD fans.

Thanks for confirming.

For anyone interested, I load tested the fans in this manner vs 11” mishimoto 1700 cfms and was surprised that the mishimoto pulled more cfms on my fmic setup.

How did you go about measuring the CFM rating of these two fan setups? I'm assuming you had both fan setups installed in your car, so that would make it it an "apples to apples" comparison of the fans, but I'm just curious on what you used & how you measured the CFM flow on each.

Hi Pete. Correct. I had them mounted to the same shroud and tested for highest and average flow at all points behind the blades.

I also tested the pull from the IC side.

Heres what I found for rx8 s2 fans vs mishimotos 11” (1700 cfm) high flow fans.

Driver side highest reading
Rx8 s2 1023 ft/min
Mishimoto 1435 ft/min

Passenger side
Rx8 s2 1122 ft/min
Mishimoto 1574 ft/min

Make your own judgements from here. 8^)

Neal A also loaded his brushless fans and they netted over 2,000+ ft/min.

Also test drove the car in heat. And the s2 fans run hotter on the 20B

Using an anemometer from Amazon. (The 1653 shown was not repeatable so so I threw that out)

That's so cool you found an anemometer to test with. I bought a cheap air speed sensor with hopes of measuring flow in the engine bay with the car driving around, but that's a back-burner project for me.

I suggested in another RX8 fan thread a while back that the dual FAL fan setups the modified RX8 owners are using in lieu of the OE fans/shroud will flow much higher. The idea kind of got poo-poo’d because some here are wanting to maintain a similar OE look. I wouldn’t be surprised if they outflow the Mishimoto too. The OE RX8 fans were barely adequate imo.

@Aarkaah got a link to those Mishimoto fans?
Why are you switching to the RX8 fans if the Mishimoto flow more?

Thanks for sharing the data. That was epic! Going to add to FAQ

In all fairness, the actual cfm under load is specific to each persons setup. Also, manufacturer cfms do not mean anything unless they can be proven under load.

BUT if I had to bet on reliability, I would bet on the Mazda OEM fans outlasting all other fans. My decision is based solely on cooling at the moment.

FAL units (420,440,490 etc) are talked about frequently also but the proof is in the test. apples to apples, same configuration, same load/obstructions and the same measuring method. If not, it’s all hearsay and old wives tales. (Would love to see this data)

For my test, my fans beat brand new rx8 s2 fans. They will stay on the build.

generally speaking, the stronger fan is the stronger fan all else being equal.

At this moment yes. But… who would you trust long term is the point.
