Reliabilty Question
I am considering the 3rd gen RX-7 and one thing that bothers me is that I sometimes here that it has maintenance reliability problems. Every owner I talk to loves their car, and that is such a good sign, but if the guys who really know the 3rd gen could please share with me if there is actually problems with keeping the car running, I would really appreciate it!
Thanks

quick and dirty reply:
yes. it's difficult to keep it up. you have to actually take care of it and maintain it very consistantly and thuroughly. And even when you do, you can still expect to need a new engine (read: rebuild) at around 100K miles.
That being said, everything is relative. if you're used to a Honda, then yes, it's very difficult to keep maintained. If you're used to a '65 VW Bus, then it will seem like it's built like a rock & doesn't need anything.
You just have to make sure oil is changed before 3000 miles, fluids are constantly monitored, etc.... make sure you're not racing it in 110 degree weather... do reliability mods (down pipe, big radiator, better temp gauge, silicon hoses, etc.).
Treat it like the inexpensive exotic it is, and you'll get all the performance an ultra pricey exotic would give.
But, if you want a high performance import that you don't have to pay close attention to, get a Supra (However, I'll argue with you how the RX-7 is better for everything but drag racing - and it's pretty close even at that).
