Yes and No. Have you ever seen your downpipe/turbine housing glowing at night? Turbo timing seems prudent in this case. Also, many aftermarket turbos are oil cooled only. Doesn't hurt to plan ahead.

Only after a hard run. If you can manage to drive sanely for a few miles prior to parking your car to give it a chance to cool down, there's no need for a turbo timer.

Yeah, turbo timers are annoying in my opinion. If you've just driven the car hard then just wait and let it idle for a minute at least (longer if you've raced the car at the track). When I drive on the street I just take the last mile (which is a 25mph residential area anyway) nice and easy so I hardly have to wait at all after I park in the garage.

Yes, some turbos are oil cooled only and some have both oil and water cooling (coolant from the cars standard engine coolant system that run into the turbo for additional cooling). Most recent turbos, including the RX7, have both oil cooling and water cooling. Many manufactures of turbo cars now say that letting your car run to cool down the turbo is unnecessary. But I'd do it anyway if the car was driven hard.

This is the advanced tech section. In order to post here, you are required to understand that a turbo timer is a waste of space, time, and money. Letting your car sit at idle will only heat up the engine and all of the components around it. The idea is to shut your car down when it is as cool as possible. Sitting at idle does EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE because there is no air flowing thru the radiator. Just drive it easy for the last 2 minutes before you reach your destination, and shut it down.

Turbo timers are for suckers, and dumb kids that don't know any better.

hahahaha, yeah. I still got one...doh! I don't really use it anymore. I was thinking of playing with it and making it run the fans for a couple of minutes after shutdown but...

Depends how you use it...

1) shut car off (turbo timer off)
2) turn key to on, set timer for 5 mins
3) turn fan to "1", turn AC on
4) remove keys and leave

Keeps the fans running for 5 mins to cool the engine bay for folks to lazy to do any fan mods...

And too lazy to let the car cool down naturally before parking it.

Search and you'll find a thread where someone with a turbo timer had his garage chopped open by the fire department after his turbo timer failed to shut off. It was reported by his neighbors, who thought he was in the garage trying to asphyxiate himself. They hacked open the door to his car, too, I believe and caused other damage. Then his tools were stolen out of his violated garage... all because he was too damn lazy to let his car cool down by driving it sanely before parking it.

It may not happen to you, but I'm sure most people don't think that bottle warmers for nitrous systems can malfunction either. Why take the chance?

Uh, Jim, I think he was talking about shutting the engine off, then using the turbo timer to run the fans to drop underhood temps after shutoff, much like the one fan mod that uses the 10-minute cooldown sequence of the ECU.

Yeah, I know, "why waste the money when you could..." No, I'm not a proponent of turbo timers, just clarifying what he was saying.

Yeah thanks Kento for actually reading what I wrote.

For those who didn't get it - the engine isn't running, the timer is only keeping the power on so that the fans run for some amount of time to circulate air under the hood. IMO a good use of such a device if you have one (such as I did). I agree that using it as originally intended is not required.

Jim I've read heaps of your stuff and I completely respect you as an extremely capable person when it comes to all facets of automotive engineering, a bit of a shame you're so quick to discount everyone else as morons.

Like I care what he was talking about.

The point still stands that if you let the car cool down naturally before parking, there's no need for a turbo timer to provide ANY function after shutdown.

unfortunatly... and i hate to say it.... i want a turbo timer. and i only have ONE purpose for wanting one: when i get pulled over. sadly im serious though. ive been pulled over 3 times in my FD so far.... all 3 times were after a "hard run" (go figure).... luckily i only recieved 1 ticket for the 3 times ive been pulled over. in any case, i always end up sitting there while the cop does his thing (running my plates, talking to me, drinking coffee, eating a donut, or whatever the else takes them so long to get done while im just sitting there). Anyway, it always ends up with me (freaking out about the ticket) but also watching the overheat exhaust light come on and stay on while im waiting. all i can think about is cooking my turbos, and cat... when i should be worrying about how to try and talk my way out of the ticket.

now to be fair this is a completely rediculous and illogical reason to get a turbo timer... BUT to be frank, this IS a fast car... and if im screwing around i do EXPECT to get tickets, plain and simple. there is one remedy to this problem however.... go the speed limit at all times and i wont have to worry about tickets or a turbotimer to keep my car from destroying itself while i get another ticket.... live and learn i suppose (im still working on that part).

most cops make you turn off the car so that there is less probability of you being tempted to pull away while they are eating their donut and writing you a ticket

yeah, i do my best and use (relativly) good judgement when it comes to playing around with the car... i have had the first one for 4 something years now and (most of the time) dont have any problems cause i try to use my noggen. first rule of thumb: no playing on city streets, second: no playing in highway traffic or poor visibility, and lastly check your mirrors often and SLOW DOWN before highway on ramps. if you use these tips, you too can get your ticket count down to less than 1 per year . anyway, i dont condone this behavior (for the record).

i was also thinking, that (in regards to the turbotimer) said highway patrol man would probably not be too happy if he asked me to "shut off the car" and then i told him "thats not possible sir... you see, i recently installed a turbo timer which prevents me from turning off the car." most likely id get pulled out of the car and billy clubbed... "no we dont have time for paperwork johnson... just sprinkle some crack on him." thanks dave chapelle.

You have provided an excellent example of another reaason NOT to have a turbo timer. True story:

A forum member in a modded FD is driving 100 mph in a 35 mph zone. The police see him and pull him over. The police are already on edge because of the high rate of speed. Perhaps it is a stolen car. He pulls over, but can't shut off his car. The turbo timer won't allow it. The police call out to him on the loudspeaker "turn off your engine". He cannot comply. The police feel threatened, and draw their weapons. The driver holds his keys out the window, and the situation is eventually subdued.

Add this to the, already long, list of reasons not to have a turbo timer

Uh...that forum member must not understand directions very well. You're not stuck with the timer once it starts and "can't shut off the car." If you don't want to wait for the timer, you just press the "power" button and the unit shuts off, killing the engine.

Cripes, 100 mph in a 35 mph zone? No wonder the cops had their guns drawn....
