Question The Goods, Bads, and What to do?Change of heart, im selling my TT 300ZX for and RX-7

Ok, I have finally came to the end of my Z era. I though about a supra, but I dont really think they are all that, and not for the money people want for them. My Z right now has around 420hp! Not bad for a freshman to mechanics and only 19. I have always liked the RX-7, but everyone scared me away because of the rotary motor. Well I think my ***** are big enough now and Im going to do it the right way this time. Im getting my beater car and then have my RX as my second car. I only have my Z now, so its hard driving her everyday. What I really want to know is what is good and bad on the RX, what to look for when buying, and should have checked out, and finally where is the best place to get mods from. All mine came from STILLEN, I just order the mag, and went to town with my credit card. Finally I am really thinking about getting one with a great body and f*cked motor, and just go ahead and get the motor put in with a ton of mods done. But Im not sure. What kind of prices am I looking at?? Just to help me out, how do u classify RX-7's upgrades. We go by stages for Z's. So Im stage VI+. Intake and stuff like that?? How are Rx's marked?? Right now im doing my research any info would help and if u want to email me.
Thanks
Joel

Hey Joel,

Welcome aboard! I'll have to say, the 3rd gen RX7 is simply the most satisfying (sp) - and yes, sometime frustrating - car I've ever driven.

Try these sites for new/potential owner info:

http://www.rx7turboturbo.com/robrobinette/

and

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/

There are other good sites too, but these two should keep you reading for the next month or so.

With RX7s, it's not really who (retailer or manufacturer), but how it is implemented. #1 rule of thumb, do an ecu/fuel upgrade on your third performance mod. Rotaries simply do not tolerate detonation like piston engines do.

I've never seen us use anything like BPU, BPU+, etc. We just list mods, hehe.

Getting a 7 in need of a motor is a very good idea. This way you can make sure it was done right. I wished I did that, but I bought mine w/o doing my research. I lucked out though, as that my aftermarket warrenty covered a new engine.

Still though, there are things I would have done different if I knew the things I know now - like who to get an engine from, waht kind of mods and in what order, etc.

Do your research! When you think you are ready and know enough about buying a 3rd gen, go back and try to dig up more.

Ask questions - you've come to the right place!

It ould be great to get an FD (3rd gen RX7) with a blown motor for cheap - you'll probably have to rebuild it soon anyway unless you really got a nice one and you'll pay for it. I've seen FDs with blown motors for $7500-$10000. You'll pay $12000 to $22000 for a decent RX7 with the higher price being a 95 R2 with low mileage. Get a 93 with a decent body for as cheap as you can and have it towed to KD Rotary in Nazareth, PA - you're in VA - it's close enough. Don't go to Peter Farrel Supercars in Manasses - trust me. Dave at KDR is the best rotary guru on the east coast - trust me on this one also. A street-ported motor will cost you $5K installed. Get your parts off partstrader.com - you'll save a boatload of money. The RX7 store (Jason) can help you with very good prices for mods for the FD - rx7store.net
Break down:

FD with blown motor: $10K (high)
streetport motor $5K
clutch $700 installed
intake $200
dp $300 installed
hi-flo $300 installed
cb $400 installed
intercooler $1000 installed
remapped ECU or Power FC $1000 installed and tuned

With this set-up you'll be at 11.9-12.2 and very reliable if you have some of the reliability mods done and are getting your engine done at a good shop. So less than $19K you can have a 400 hp monster with a new engine and good reliability - good luck

If you want to do alot of the work yourself you can get the motor for around $3500 shipped to your shop and swap the motor out yourself. This was while the motor is out it'll be very easy to go non-sequential if you want. If you go non sequestial it will be VERY easy to go big single turbo down the road.

I guess it would be easier for us to advise you if we know your plans. What kind of 1/4 performance are you looking for, 10's, 11's, 12's or what. That way we can help you to a path for what you want. How much $$$ you wanting to spend on mods??? The cool thing about buying a moded car is you buy it all whan you finance the car (if your financing it). If you go buy a car and then mod it you have to pay out of pocket or credit card for the parts. Plus when you buy a moded car your getting the mods ssoooo much cheaper. Might not matter to ya but I thought I'd throw it in.

Personally if i wanted a real fast RX7 I would buy a single turbo 7 with a blown motor then get a new motor from KDR or Pettit Racing and install it myself. I would also go over all the mods and make sure they are in good shape and high quality (which most are)

Later and good luck,
STEPHEN

Come on Down!

You've got some good advice posted here......but don't forget the little things......

Turbo Timer
Boost Gauge
Aluminum Air Separator Tank (AST)

Plan on doing your mods, one at a time....that way you can budget your costs and, if the mod gives you some probs....you can always back it off till you figure out what went wrong.

Be sure and read all the how-to's from the two sites posted above...Robinette's & Scuderiaciriana's

Also, be sure and use the search engine on the forum for old tech tips and prob resolving.

Best of Have a great time!

You might want to check out www.alfredrhee.com

He's also on this forum as A'PEXi RX7 or something.

He's owned 2 TTZ's and is going to buy his 2nd FD.

Well I’m really looking for a powerhouse, and a weekend toy. Basically I can barely beat a new corvette, I think it’s a Z06. Well basically I would like to be able to hand his *** to him with out NOS, then put NOS in. I mean getting 11's would be nice. I want to get on with a blow motor, or one with little or no mods done. I feel more comfortable when I know what, how, when, and who did the installs. So if something goes wrong I only have myself to blame. I am still a rookie, but hey I must learn some day. I think what I might do, is get someone to install the new motor if I get one that is blow, and then mess around with the blow one on my own, and how much do the shop manuals run from Mazda on the car. Ill get that and read it front to back just like I did on my Z. That helped out so much last time.

Thanks everyone for your help, give me time and ill be putting my knowledge in here too.

Also, if you do get a 7 and mod it out, don't forget to upgrade your radiator. Fluidyne or Mazda Comp are pretty popular choices. 7's are known to have overheating problems if you don't treat them right.

since everyone is in a sharing info mood, can you help me with this: the car is stock i've just added the following: turbo timer, hks dp, boost and a/f gauge, new trans with act street/strip cluch, apex gt spec cb : going single in awhile but for now i my car is going to be pretty much set up like erniet's, on the forum. he goes high 11's but i think thats because he doesn't want to get kicked off the track for not having a roll cage.

the question is if i had the non seq setup (i originally wanted 11s but now want mid 10s) and added the apex single turbo kit would that then put where i want to be? as far s erniet's mod just picture a perfect setup with the right fuel, power fc, the right ignition, 1200 cc sec.

would it be possible to knock a 1 ec off with the turbo kit, it seems like it would and it should, could it do better. i like to think ahead, i don't think i'm really asking for advice, just an opinion and conversation. i kind of made up my mind with what i want to do: power fc , apex rx6, 550 cc prime and 1200 cc sec, hks twin ig, apex fmic, custom mp, apex gt spec, fluydine radiator, street port, etc.

while where on my wish list, what's yours?
