WTF Happened? Heat scoring to the max
WTF Happened? Heat scoring to the max
so i just tore apart my engine cuz it over heated like literally 10+ times cuz long story short i got a bunk non oe t-stat.
so there was some heat scoring on the rotor bearings and plates, but both were not as bad as the front stat gear and needle bearing: look at the pics: http://i24.tinypic.com/xlhzqd.jpg
so wtf did i do wrong with the rebuild 4500km ago? or was it because it got overheated?
thanks

You let the rearmost needle/thrust bearing slip down behind the spacer during assembly (or a front cover job done in the car) and then tightened it all down. The spacer crushed the bearing, and the fragments have been floating around in the oil supply scarring up bearings, shafts, oil pumps, etc. The heat caused by metal to metal friction with no bearing caused the thrust plate to scorch and crack.
You're much less likely to have this happen if your engine is on a stand that allows you to rotate the front of the engine to an upright position when assembling the bearings/thrust washers. It also makes it easier to check the e-shaft end float.

Its possible. I had a pro builder that used the teflon washer for the front cover o-ring on a car with s4 front castings, which is another retarded mistake. My theory is that someone else actually did that part, because I can't see how he would do something so stupid, maybe what happened to you as well.

He could have tried to do a shortcut when doing the front cover job in the car. I always remove all the front stack parts all the way down to that last spacer to check and be sure it is all in place, but some people just try to remove the front cover and slap another one back on.
