Is it worth rebuiding turbo's?
My turbo is leaking oil somewhere. Whenever I get on boost, you can smell the oil burning. Not good. I go through alot of oil because this. Here's the deal. I can either:
a) get the turbo rebuilt and make sure there are no other probs with it (play in the axles or whatever else) and have everything tip-top shape for 350 bucks. For an extra 150, I could also have the wastegate machined out to around 32 mm and have a new valve and everything, and also clip the exhaust compressor wheel (not sure if I wanna do that. read about efficiency issues).
or
b) wait it out. Burn more oil, hold out for a month and a half, save my money and buy a new bigger turbo (i.e. t04e or something of the like). But that wouldn't include an fmic.. Which would be even more money. Which would mean waiting even longer.
Basically, is it worth getting my old turbo rebuilt? I'm really considering it because of the oil problem. It sucks having to pour all this oil into my car. It's a big economic thing for me. I just bought a walbro fuel pump, s-afc, and am about to order new secondaries (probably 850's). Relvinnian and I are going to do all the installs of my goodies. My thought was that we could pull off the turbo while doing all the other installs, send it in for the rebuild, and have it come back and everything else all finished up. Get everything done at once. After talking with Relvinnian, he thinks I should wait it out for the bigger turbo and not waste my money. Is $350 good for a rebuild? Not to mention that I also have the wastegate porting option. It would be done by turbospecialties.com down in Alabama. They were recomended to me by Jason. There are always lots of other things I'd like to do to my car with the money instead of saving up for a turbo. But then again, I would love having a mammoth turbo. I'm not sure which way I want to go. Suggestions?

Putting in the TO4E is going to be quite a bit more expensive than going with a rebuild/upgraded stock turbo. Don't forget along with that TO4E you're going to need a new exhaust manifold to mount it on, wastegate since the TO4E won't have an internal wastegate and you'll most likely want an aftermarket ECU to control all that extra fuel you'll be needing. Can't exactly just stick in bigger injectors and expect the car to run right.

I had my stock turbo apart at one point.
If you are cheap then you can just buy new oil seals for the turbo, shouldnt cost more than 30 bux from turbocity.
Take your turbo off the car and unbolt the housings from the cartridge.
Then mark the turbo's alignment so when you put it back together it will still be mostly balanced.
Unscrew the bolt on the end of the compressor shaft and slide the compressor off.
Put on new oil seals (they are like snap rings). BTW if your bearings and shaft are blue/loose then you might want to get a full rebuild kit from turbocity (like 100 bux).
Lastly, put everything back together, make sure turbines are aligned so they are balanced.
This is the cheap way out. You can also have Turbocity or turbonetics rebuild your turbo. At the same time you can get a Grand national compressor upgrade like mine. the whole shabang should only cost like 400 bux or so.
Dont forget, turbos are for sale for unfder 200 bux on here all the time.
