Worth getting a midpipe?

I have an 87 N/A, and I recently had new mufflers put on, but not a complete exhaust system. With the stock piping, is it worth getting a mid pipe? If so, what could i use that would be less restrictive than the cat. while not being obnoxiously loud? Thanks
