Worried about FCD performance!

Hey guys, I was checking out the teamfc3s site to see how feasable the D.I.Y. FCD would be. There is a great deal of info on how FCDs work on this site and now I am worried about buying a commercial FCD for my S4. The fact that they tell the ecu that the boost is lower RIGHT THROUGH THE BOOST RANGE is crap. I don't want to lean out the air/fuel mix until I really have to! Have a look at the graph on this page:
http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/articles/fcd/diy_fcd.htm

So not only are the commercial FCDs overpriced, they aren't real good either! Why doesn't someone make and sell a decent one? Anyone else find this info disturbing? I'd like to hear opinions on this subject because I thought that buying an FCD would be the easiest part of modding my car, and now I don't know how to proceed.

These has been a long raging debate on what the boost sensor actually does.&nbsp My research has show it does not affect fuel delivery - other argue otherwise.&nbsp The FCD should not affect fuel delivery, IMO.

that graph is probably 10 years old. I'm sure they all cut in right before fuel cut off now instead. I think racing beat changed theres a while ago.

Well assuming you can actually build the thing, the TeamFC3S DIY FCD, which performs as well as or better than the commercial ones yet costs a mere fraction of the price, seems the obvious answer!

thanks for another obvious answer NZ! If what Ted and Scott say is true then I would much prefer to just buy one and plug it in. The cost is probably worth all the time and ****-farting around involved in creating that one from scratch! So what is the best COMMERCIAL FCD people? Any to stay away from?

In the states it's Racing Beat.&nbsp Trust/GReddy makes one for the Kouki/Series V cars that (I think) can be used on the Zenki/Series IV cars also for about $150US...

I keep getting quoted about $200Aus ( about $100US) but I don't know what brand it is. $150US for the Greddy sounds expensive. How much is the RB one? Anyone know?

Yeah, I should stop saying that!
You're right, the DIY one is a bit of pissing around. Actually it's just interpreting the schematic that had me scratching my head for a while. Building it was easy. And I'm just a tightass at heart! They cost NZ$150-200 over here, so NZ$20 really appealed...

That DIY FCD looks dead simple to make, why don't you save yourself $100 and make it? I'm going to next week actually. (no more exams!!!)

We really need someone to take time and start building them to offer them to everyone.&nbsp I was thinking of doing that, but I don't like to do "mass produced" electronics kits - I don't trust my circuit building abilities to charge people money!&nbsp I know have quite a few talneted electronics people out there...maybe for $10-$20 profit for each circuit?&nbsp Hell, if you don't want to mess with the sales and distribution, I'll pipe them through N-XSi if you want and take care of all the customer service...

Thing is, once you factor in the costs to make them in a professoinal manner, the time to get it all up and going, distribution charges and the low volume, I don't think you're really all that far from the $91/107 racingbeat charges. I may be wrong, but I know from a place I worked, that it's not always cheap getting that sort of stuff done. If you do it, great, but I don't know that it's worth it.

RB FCDs (the only ones I've opened) have a trimmer in them anyway. Pop the cover and adjust it if you don't like the way it works.

FCD

I am going to start producing them soon. I have given a schematic to the board manufacturer and am waiting on boards. As of now I am still needing to find O.E. style Mazda connectors so no splicing is involved. I am going to do a small run of a hundred or so unless utherwise notified. I am going to sell them for about U.S. $50. I have to pay $250 for board layout and various other expenses. Please leave me feedback on this.

Thanks,
Dustin

@ $50US I would buy one from you if it works better than the others do. ie. it doesn't kick in until near fuel cut. I don't know how much delivery from the States to Australia would be, so at a guess I would be shelling out about $130Aus all up.

I think the one I just removed from my car ('87 Turbo) is from Racing Beat. It's got the little "trim" inside... My car felt sluggish with it installed, but it might just need to be adjusted.

If anyone is interested, make me an offer. I'll let it go cheap.
