Won't rev high, can't floor it.

Ok.. 87 n/a.

I put in brand new plugs, swapped in known good coils and wires. I still have this problem.. The timing light continues to flash when it cuts out, so that leads me to believe that it's a fuel problem, not an ignition problem..

What happens is that I can't really get it to rev past 4000.. Sometimes it's up to 5500, sometimes low as 3500.. I'm in neutral, by the way, so there's no engine load..

If i floor it from idle, it revs fine up to about 3300-3500, then just DIES. It falls back to 2000 on the dot, and will "maintain" 2000, albeit very poorly. It backfires and shakes like a crazy fool. Un-flooring it returns it to it's healthy idle.

Lots and lots of searching has taught me (thanks, hailers) that the secondary injectors do NOT fire unless there is load. So, that's probably not the problem. I get +14v at them, anyway.

TPS is spot on, I've frobbed with the AFM connector, that doesn't seem to change anything.. I swapped on another pressure sensor, didn't change anything. Timing is spot on. I've grounded the engine to the battery to the chassis.

Any ideas?

no cats.. but it hasn't had cats for a while, and it ran fine then.

I tried re-grounding the ECU.. same problem..

argh.. the car is basically un-drivable like this.. I doubt it could get above maybe 50 mph.

Anyone else?

Ok.. I detatched the secondary injector cables on my other car.. It runs a hella lot better than the 87, but it does have a simmilar problem. In neutral, i can rev it to ~5500, then it cuts out.. but it "feels" different than what's happening in the 87..

Also, I can drive it around and floor it, and it won't buck until 3800 (..when the secondaries are trying to come online.) In the 87, i can floor it below **2000**, but anything above that just kills it..

hmmmmmm...

can't think of anything but have you check your vac lines? you might have a few small leaks some where...
also, how's your timing? too advanced? retard?
um...are you running rich? too rich? what about your air filter, too dirty? same goes for your fuel filter...
just some thoughts...at best, i'm bumping it back up...
