Clogged cats....?
Does it overheat if kept running?

Remove the cats an install them in a storage box.
Have local shop weld up a test pipe where the cats were.
turn up the stereo & enjoy the ride..

Still, take the cats off and look at them inside. Are they made for a rotary engine? If not, they will melt in a matter of minutes. Also, clean and test the Air Flow Meter, mine went south and caused glowing manifold/cats.

Its a possibility, if the cats got melted and clogged, there isn't enough exhaust velocity at idle to push through them, and it just stalls out. Pull your cats off and check them, like was said before, if they arent cats that are able to withstand the heat and exhaust pulses of a rotary, they wont last long at all...

*edit*- I think you may have meant the AFM, not the cats. But yes, a bad AFM could cause a bad, or no idle problem as well.

This happened to me and it was worn out spark plugs. The power was way down and the cats were glowing. The plugs were not firing, thus no power, and the gas was burning in the cats rather than in the engine, thus glowing cats. New plugs solved the problem.

When I picked mine up I had the same problem. I took my cats off, *carefully* placed them in someone elses garbage dumpster and talked the local muffler guy into bending me a pipe. All better now except some jackass replaced the stock duals with the crappiest sounding muffler (just one) ever created.

I had this problem back in 1992 with my 87 Sport Package. Turns out I had a bad primary injector. The exhaust was glowing bright red in the summer. When I finally found the problem the car ran fine and the cats survived the barbeque.

The car would barely idle, hardly move from a stop, after ~3800 rpm the car would pull fairly decently.
