Wiring troubles

I have an 86 gxl n/a 5 speed. Im having some difficulties im wondering if anyone else here has had a similar problem... Ok so my gauges stay on constantly even with the keys out of the ignition. The only way to kill them is pull the btn fuse.. And when i hook up the clutch switch it will blow the room fuse and the meter fuse also the brake lights sometimes stay on till i push the clutch in.ive been over and over the harness cant find any burnt/ damaged wire unhooked any wiring ive added in myself. Any ideas that point in the right direction are very appreciated im not much of a wiring wizz but i understand the basics

First off did the car always behave this way since you've had it or is it something which occurred out of the blue? Secondly, you are stating the gauges stay on constantly and this could be interpreted as one of two things for it means the needles of the gauges indicate what the fuel reading is and the voltage gauge needle registers what the voltage is, or it means the lights to the gauge cluster is on, so which is it?

It has started recently. And the fuel and voltage gauge read constantly.

Are there other things which work when the key is off such as the blinkers or wipers? If so, then your ignition switch is at fault. If your ignition switch is not at fault then there you have a backfeeding problem or wires are crossed or plugs are inadvertently switched. Now one thing you mentioned but have yet to address is you stated something about wires you added. What did you add? Also, was there anything you did to the car right before your problem occurred.

One easy thing to do is unplug the alternator and see if that affects the gauge issue.

Additionally, the meter fuse powers the gauge cluster w/key to on (not off). The BTN fuse supplies power to a number of fuses w/constant power but the meter fuse is not one of them (room is one of them).

Those are the only things ive noticed staying on with key off. The wires i added were for a radar detector an electric fan and radio power due to my car being robbed and the guy snatched my radio out n ruined that part of my harness i also have my fuel pump wired through a hand made harness and relay due to my car being v8 swapped. But it was swapped and fine for months before the problem started. I really appreciate the input. I was thinking it could be the ignition switch but i have stripped the dash out to go through and make sure there are no burnt wires or plugs damaged and im also going to check the fuse box out and go through ,my switches as well n check them all.

Since your wiring has been altered it just makes it more complicated to diagnose. Since you have issues w/two fuses (room and meter) you need to take into account if any of your changes involved those fuses especially the meter fuse.
