Wires by my computer getting hot and melting?

Hi, the other day i was starting my car and it wouldnt start, so i tryed again and then the inside of my car started to smoke under the carpet of the passanger side. So i pulled up the carpet and the metal plate covering the computers. " i think there both computer" ?
I found that theres a red ground wire that connects to some other wires in a big strand of like 50 wires coming off the computer. But with this wire getting hot it melted in to all the other wires. So i pulled all of the wires apart and taped them and it started right up i was happy that nothing happend to the computer. So i drove it around for about 15 mins to and back from the store parked it. Then came out the next day, tryed to start it and it did the same thing again, started to smoke in the car again and the wire melted again. Can anyone please help me with whats going on ? Thanks alot

There are no large gauge red wires going into the ECU.

I would suspect that it is an aftermarket wire for a car stereo amplifer that was taped into the harness and improperly fused...

or that someone was regrounding some wires with the wrong color and you have a poor connection or short.

Getting hot enough to melt the wires inside the car through a heat shield and sheet metal would set off the overheat exhaust light in the idiot lights, as well as burn the paint off the outside of the panel long before melting wires on the inside.

You say its a ground wire. We figure you think that because one end is going to a ground point. I'd get a pair of dykes (Jill and Sue) and cut that wire, then set it aside. Try again. YOU have nothing to lose.

If you have a meter, and the car starts, I'd put a meter on it and see if its hot or not. Is that red wire coupled to some other wire. What color is the other wire. Does the other wire have a stripe. What color is the stripe????
