wire hanging under car...

I have the equivelant of an 86 gxl with single exhaust.

On the passanger side where the the old muffler was removed, there is a wire with a sort of cylinder connector on the end of it that isnt attached to anything. It runs up and attaches to the mount that used to hold the muffler on. The wire is like a flat braided strap... so i think its a ground wire, but what does it attach to!?

(passanger side aussie version)

It used to be over one of the studs on the factory exhaust.

screwy

back when i had my 90 GX, I was driving along after winding it out when all of the sudden I smelled "burning". I glance in my mirrors and smoke is billowing out of the back of the car. My first thought it gas tank so I hit the 4-ways, pulled it off the road and ran like ******... the smoking eventually slowed and stopped. I could tell it was coming from in behind the tire/brake area.

I checked everything out and could find nothing. No leaks, no indication of fire, all I saw was this stupid braided cord hanging down and couldn't figure out what it was. I'm guessing that came loose, rubbed on something or exhuast and started melting/smoking.
