Lightbulb Wiper switch fix the easy way...

After reading post after post about the wiper switch fix, and Faq after faq, then having my wipers totally die, I decided to try it..
The speed and park relay were already gone, but the main relay(the big white g8 one) finally burnt out, the coil was open, leaving me with no wipers whatsoever so I bought a new main relay which is NTE # R46-5012-12, 12a 12vdc, a direct replacement fit, a 25watt soldering iron, a desoldering wick, and some lead free solder, Soloracer had the G6c replacement relays, he gave me one to try out to see if I could handle the repair before we mangled his switch to...
I have 2 wiper switches, I started experimenting with a mangled one to learn the desoldering process, sitting at Soloracers house, I messed around with the desoldering braided wick for about 45 minutes and had very little success.. We also found that the g6c replacement relay has different pin spacing than the original.. So I went home and setup everything there..
After about 30 minutes of screwing around with the desoldering wick, I noticed that the solder on the board would not stick to the wick, it sort of just balled off of it, I grabbed my jar of soldering paste from my toolbox and wiped the length of wick in soldering paste to see what would happen, success, the solder literally ran up the wick and left the pin free and clear.. I grabbed my other switch which was to be my 'fixed' keeper for my TII, and went at it, in 10 minutes I had both relays removed and sitting on the table, now it was time to tackle the off pin spacing of the new g6c relay...
One faq mentions that solder 1/2 pieces of wire to the pins helps, I gotta disagree, that's twice as much soldering than what is really needed.. I bent the pins outward with needlenose pliers, then inserted one row of pins, and slowly walked the other pins into the holes, the pins being bent, do not quite come up flush to the board through the holes, so I inverted the board, solder joints up, put a dab of solder on the connection points, then applied just enough heat to get a bit of drop through with the solder, then I did the big G8 Relay which was a piece of cake, total install time about 2 minutes for both relays...
The moment of truth.. I installed the switch turned the key on, and had nothing, no wipers, then remembering that the wipers don't work in the ACC position, I turned it to ON, and everything works, both speeds, park, intermittent, the whole nine yards..
In closing I had the most success using the soldering tip that looks like a small slot screwdriver, the pointed one concentrated the heat in to small of an area, putting the paste on the wick made it work like it was suppose to, keeping the soldering tip clean and free of solder biuldup makes the connection joints nice and neat.. Also for removing the covers on the wiperswitch, a small cut off wheel with an arbour mounted in the drill press makes it about a 1 minute job.. Hope this helps anyone that doesn't have the luxury of having 2 switches to screw with, or patience...Max
