Hello all... I have just bought a 10th AE and moved from Austin, Tx. to Duluth Minnesota... I don't know anyone nuttier about FCs than myself and I am looking to preserve the already pristine condition of my RX... Today was the first day we got snow... So I am starting to think seriously and look around. All the local cars here are rusted to crap and back. From asking around people say its from the salt used on the roads during winter... Is there anything to be done about this?
Also... What other fluid type business could anyone recommend... Oil types and coolant mixtures... And should I bother getting snow tires or should I just get get new goodyear eagles? Either way I have to get new tires soon for sure. If there is no way to stop the rust I am willing to garage my honey and walk all winter, so feel free to suggest that bad news, I can take it... ;P
I would love any other advice you northern enthusiasts can offer me!

P.s. I feel alone rx-7 wise here in Duluth... I am in the Kansas City RX Club and the Austin RX club... I think I have seen two other RXs since I moved here last August...
Any of you forum members live here in Duluth?
Maybe looking to start a club! Hehehe... We'll have hot chocolate and stare at our cars in the snow and talk about what we'll do to them next spring when we dig 'em out! hehehe...

Don't drive it in salted road conditions!

Definitly, drive in the salt and your car is done. My 7 is all eaten up with rust because of the salt.

My first and new '90 was destroyed by Michigan salt due to winter driving. It was sent through a car wash about once every two weeks. If you can garage it winters you will certainly save the body.

Make sure you start it regularly, at least once a week and let it warm up fully. Letting a rotary sit for too long with out starting isn't the best idea. I'd change out all the fluids, such as oil, coolant, etc.

I'd work on it all winter, and start it for like 5 minutes a day .put a full tank of gas in it, so ya dont run out in tha winter good luck. get a big truck, and drive it in tha snow

Hey... I am from duluth also. There are a few rx7s running around that I have seen. I have only met one person with a 3rd gen who works at Advanced
Auto on superior street.

I have a 87 TII. There is another TII, its a white 5th series...havnt actually met him yet though.

There are a hand full of n/a's though...havnt seen them around latly though, might be because of the winter but who knows.

Yeah, if you can, just store it, however, you can still get it up on jack stands and undercoat her...Afterall its not just salt that takes its toll...Then it will be much better protected once you do hit the streets again!

Okay well not to hijack this thread, but for those of us who can't afford to buy another car and insure it for the winter season, what are some options? Undercoating with what, just a rust resistant paint? Any suggestions on what brand type etc? thanks.

This type of advice bothers me. In order for this to work, it would have to be started once a week, then allowed to FULLY come up to temperature and stay there for an hour or so. This means driving the car, which you want to avoid.

To store the care properly is easy. Start it up and drive it until warm. Now change the oil and pump the tires up to 50 PSI or so. Wash and wax. By now the car should be cool, so change the coolant and pull the leading spark plugs. Spray in fogging oil while rotating the engine about 10 revolutions by hand. Put back in the plugs. REMOVE the battery and bring it inside. Float chargers are a good idea, but should only be connected for a week or so every month. Use an ultrasonic rodent repeller or moth ***** to keep the critters away. Cover with a thick blanket, crack windows slightly and keep in the garage.
