Will not rev past 5k?

Hello all 2nd gen owners. I'm currently looking at getting a 2nd gen RX7 my friend told me bout one for sale down the road for a really good price. He said it was in good condition but when you rev it past 5k it shuts down. He owns a 1st gen and really loves rotorys and he said his best guess was something electrical, prolly having to do with the governor. I dont know much bout rotory engine cars and just recently learned exactly how the rotory principle works in class. When I saw the idea of it i decided i had to get one to work on. I am a honda veteran and have spent many a hour scouring through honda forums asking questions and learning much so when my friend mentioned this little 2nd gen i knew one of the best places to check would be a RX7 forum, cuz who knows these little cars better than the guys who drive and work on them every day right? Hopefully you can give me some insight into what might be wrong with this car. If it wont cost an arm and a leg to fix i beleive i will go ahead and buy it. I'm a mechanic, or at least am going to school to be one right now, so any hands on work wont be a problem merely the cost of parts would be a factor.

I appreciate any help you can give me,
Mike

Have the catalytic converters checked out. There's three of them: 2 pre-cats and a main cat. The pre-cats could be clogged and choking out the engine when you rev up that high. My car did that and when I changed the two pre-cats out for new ones it ran fine. Read this write-up as well. It'll help you make a better decision towards buying the car....

or if it's a turbo....

Good luck.

I already read throught the how to buy an RX7 link, had some good pointers, but the way my friend described it it would actually kill the motor, as in not running at all, would clogged catalytic converter really do that?
I intend to go check it out for myself friday but was hopin to have some preliminary info before i went.
Appreciate the info,
Mike

Mine would rev up to about 4k and then seemingly hit a wall, but would not kill it.

Here's a link on the forum to help you out...

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...rpm+hesitation

Read somewhere else it could be starving for fuel so check the fuel sock and the fuel filter. The secondary fuel injectors could be clogged as well since most folks shift before 4k and they can get clogged up from not being used.

There is a factory service manual you can look through if you want some more insight...

bad secondary injector, bad secondary injector wiring, TPS issue, fuel pump issue, shitty plug wire/plugs, faulty ECU are all things to check.

To me though, it sounds mostly like a secondary injector wire/injector.

Ok i talked to guy again today and got some more specifics, when he went to check it out the first time he ran it it ran fine, then after that it had the problem it would hit 5k and shut off, since it was intermittent he thought it was electrical. Would a bad ECU cause this? He mentioned maybe it had something to do with the governor? I plan on checking it out for myself tommorow so maybe i can get some more details. But any ideas you can give me would be realy helpful, kinda point me in the right direction.

any ideas YOU can give US about what kind of car this is would certianly help

Also - there is no "governor". The motor should rev past 5000rpm without issue.

I dont know specifics, got to check it out in the morning it naturally aspirated is all i know, i didnt know if yall might be able to tell me what it was right off, thought maybe one of yall had seen this before i apologize bout the lack of info was just hoping to have some preliminary info before i went down there cuz i well informed customer is less likely to get ripped off. My buddy thinks its something small prolly under $200 fix just take some time to chase down. Figured id get yalls professional opinion bout it before i went. if nothing else is apparently wrong with it when i look it over tommorow i beleive i will get it seeing as it only cost $800.
Appreciate all th info,
Mike

if it idles smoothly then it probably is just a small problem that needs to be chased down, generally problems up top in the RPM range have to do with fuel cut on turboed engines, fuel injectors/wiring for them in both n/a and turboed and catalytic converters in both and lastly the 5th and 6th ports in n/a engines.

i had a problem similar, but i doubt its yours

in 2nd gear and higher, my t2 would feel like it hit a brick wall at about 5k rpm

it was a dirty air filter (stock airbox). i had dp only. the engine would choke itself out of air

Ok so a tune up and injector cleaner is top priority then, you said the 5th and 6th ports what would have to be done to reapir these? I dont have emissions testing so cat converters are gone ASAP, I have a multimeter to chase down electrical gremlins, where in the electrical would you suggest looking first?

Appreciate all the help,
Mike
