Will a first gen transmission fit a 2nd gen?
Will a first gen transmission fit a 2nd gen?
I found an old first gen rx7 at my local junkyard and its a 5 speed and I was wondering if the tranny from it will fit my 1998 non turbo 2nd gen. If so itdd be really cool.
Anyone have any idea?
Please help me out.....

1998? You do mean 1988 right?
and anyway yes, the first gen transmission is essentially the same as the FC's non turbo transmission.
You will need to swap over the entension housing, and also possibly the shifter linkagde hubs as they're slightly different aswell.
All very easy took me about 30min total to do. (yes I have a first gen tranny in my FC)

yea, my bad its a 1988 lol i wish they made a 98 :-D anyway, ill go get the tranny from the yard, because all the wreckers here in so cali want like 350-450. Also, the switch shouldn't be that difficult right?
and the extension housing is the tail shaft portion right?
and the shifter linkage hubs are the actual shifter parts right?
because someone told me that it woodn't fit because the shifter stick is too far foreward.
So I should put all the stuff off the 2nd gen tranny onto the 1st gen one and it should work right?

Depends which 1st gen transmission. I think there was a difference in 79-80 and 81-85 models. Not sure if the GSL-SE model counts either. The shifter might be off and the tranny mounts will definitely be different. I don't know if you can use the same driveshaft as well.
doesn't matter which first gen one it is.
I actually have a 'Series 1' style one ie, 1979 in my car (it's a bit of a mungrel box really, different gearset and the bigger late S3/S4/5 n/a input/output shafts)
and all you have to do is, like i said, change over the extension housing, yes it is the portion the tailshaft fits into.
And when you have both extension housings off next to each other have a look at the hubs that the shifter rod moves, you'll notice they're slightly different.
I would recommend changing them, it's **** easy to do, they're just roll pinned in there.
If you don't swap them it will 'work' but it will be _mighty_ hard to get 1st 2nd 5th and reverse aswell as being a **** to put on(trust me, i know i tried for ages before I realised what was going on).
So, basically, swap them
