wierd mixture issue

MY 87 2+2 has a hard time starting and staying started when in drive.
I was playing with it yesterday and disconnected the pressure sensor and that other thing next to the pressure sensor. when I did, my idle went up. Humm.
so I readjusted the idle speed and put it in drive. it didn't die.
I reconnected it and started to disconnect other lines. anything I take off after the throttle bodies, it works better. if I remove something before the TB it has no affect. Where is my problem? I know it is running rich, what is causing it. it has a new fuel pressure regulator. could that be it?
