I'll be a jerk now when I tell you that using periods from time to time can be a good thing.
How long have you had the car?
Smell of fuel - start at the fuel pump and work your way forward to the engine. Check all the connections and clamps to make sure that each is solid and tight. If it's even a little loose, tighten or replace it. Two summers ago one of the rubber fuel lines just plain *fell off* it's connection to the top of the pump.
Your fuel injectors may also be leaking. And you may also consider installing a fuel cut-off switc if you're smelling the gas BEFORE you start the car. Do searches here for both these ideas - they come up often as topics here.
Shitty idles are most frequently the result of vacuum leaks. You're driving a 15 year old car and chances are the vac lines are factory originals. If you read some of the posts from other users who have gone after vac lines, you'll see that sometimes the lines were so brittle they shattered in the guys' hands.
Also, check your TPS.
Are you losing coolant at all? White smoke *could* be burning coolant, which means a seal has failed in the engine and the engine will be garbage soon. If not, and you're revving it while the engine is cold (which you should NOT do, ever - you're kicking your engine in the *** when you do that) then I would think that the 'white smoke' is mostly steam, just like you'd get from any other car in winter... Checking the BAC is easy - do a search.
