Question Wide Band O2 users Install ??

My WBO2 should be here any day now; I want to prepare for the install. I have a 3” RB downpipe, obviously it has just the 1 bung for the stock O2 sensor in it. What are my options here for installing the WBO2? I need to run my stock sensor for fuel economy and emissions reasons.. And I want to leave my WBO2 hooked up all the time, not just for tuning. So what did you guys do? Can I have a shop weld another bung in my DP; will a weld hold up to the heat created right at the exit of a rotary exhaust? Is that what others are doing? Or and they adding and removing the stock sensor? What are my options as far as install? Will the car go into limp mode with the stock sensor pulled? But like I said I would really like to run both all the time.

Someone please enlighten me, cause If I am going to need to weld another bung in my DP I would like to have that all taken care of before the sensor gets here.

Thanks,

Robert

You should have a bung welded in the downpipe. It's best that it be welded as far from the turbo as is reasonable. On one car I have it welded about two inches from where the downpipe meets the presilencer. I bought bungs from SummitRacing and did it myself. It makes more sense to just go to a muffler shop and have them do it. Make allowances for the length of the sensor so it does not hit anything when it's installed. Make sure its not pointing straight down (water condensation problem there).

The other car I put the bung a couple of inches from the stock bung 02 sensor. Frankly speaking, both cars readings are the same. So much for the dreaded heat soaked sensor going **** up. It's/they've been there for close to two years with no noticable problem at all. I even thought of locating a bung after the presilencer to see what the effects are in the location.

AS I suggested above.....there are some phobics out there that are quite certain that the sensor MUST be protected from the turbo's heat (the part outside the pipe), or it will read irregular. Sorry.......I'm a doubting Thomas on that one. The one thing that the TechEdge side does emphasize is that the sensor must NEVER be placed prior to the turbo. Something about how those sensors work on a partial pressure principle or whatever.

wow, I am glad I asked. I was always under the impression that you wanted the sensor as close to the direct outbound exhaust flow as possible for the most accurate reading? this is not the case then? I thought they needed a high level of heat to work right? Also, a mufler shop will know what kind of weld I need to hold up to that kind of heat right?

hm. i don't think my rb dp has a bung already in place.

no biggie for me, though.

a muffler shop will be able to weld it in fine. I doubt you'd even have to ask them if it was specifically ok for a rotary.

***glad I asked*****

On a non-turbo it would not matter, but the turbo it does matter. I think a muffler shop will just be pleased as punch to weld one on, unless........its not a stock exaust system and then the worst thing is that they will say, "Nay, Nay, we can't do that because of the LAW". It never hurt to ask them.

Great thread Hailers .. thanks for the read. But my next question .. how come when I go to the dyno shop they just plug their WBo2 right into my stock o2 location (that we all know is right! behind the turbo) are the using a different style of WB? or are they giving me inacurate readings by placing it so close?

Thanks again,

P.S. I already called my favorate local muffler shop, they said "no problem, but bring in the parts" So I need to get a threaded bung type thingy, anyone know what kind, what thread pattern, or where I could get one? You got yours at summit Hailers?

The sensor I will be using is a Bosch LSU4 0 258 007 057

Yep. SummitRacing.com

You might ask PEPBOYS/AUTOZONE/ CLICK AND CLANG whatever place. Man, I was sure a muffler shop would have that item. I'd still ask around. Then again if you don't have the wideband right now, it takes but two or three days to get things from SummitRacing.com. Just make sure you don't get the aluminium ones.

The part number is: SUM-G2990 Called a WELD IN 02 BUNG Dirt cheap part. Maybe a buck or two each. Get four or five for the future. It'll fit your sensor.
