Why won't my trailing coil ignitors fire

I can't seem to find why my trailing coils won't fire.. i checked them to make sure they are good and they are but i get no spark.. i get spark out of the leading coils though. is there a seperate fuse or something.. all the connecters are hooked up also.

Are you getting a Check Engine light or a code? The '89-91 will flag a Check Engine light if there's a problem firing the coil itself.

If there's a code, you probably have an engine ground problem. If not, time for new spark plugs and wires.

Are you quite sure they're not firing? Many people (including myself) have had trouble using inductive-pickup timing lights on these cars, and just because it's not flashing doesn't mean it's not firing... Maybe pull the wires off of the plugs, and let them arc against the chassis or engine..

Oh... and like dcfc3s sid, and if your plugs are bad, it may not spark at all. I found it extremely hard to believe, but I was tracking down some bizarre ignition problem where it was only firing on one plug.....no matter which wire or coil lead I had hooked up to it. I replaced the plugs, and they all fire now... most odd.

Get a service manual, use it to locate the trailing coil wires from the ECU. Put a scope on the wire in the engine bay...You get signal?

I had the same problem. Car would idle and warm up fine, but no spark from trailer coils. Stepping on throttle to drive, the car would die. Following the factory manual, coils were fine. Even went so far as to check the voltages at each pin of the computer--okay. Finally, decided to re-solder all the CPU and clock connections.

Then, everything was fine. Timing light finally showed the sparks at trailing coils.
