Why are the pulley bolts so tight?

I've removed all of my A/C system now except for one little pulley. It is the one directly under the small PS pulley. I tried an adjustable wrench and a standard wrench and a mini sledge. All the wrenches want to do is round the bolt edges off and slip around...

Any methods someone could help me try out? I tried wd40 too...

I know it's only like 1/2 a pound, but it's just the fact that it's still there being useless, taking up space is what bugs me.

a 6 point 9/16" heavy dity socket usually does the trick(you may have to hammer it on now that the head is damaged but that is what keeps it from trying to round off now), i know some people tend to wrench them down pretty tight and they never want to come off again. i had the same problem with my pulley, the nut wanted to round off.

that would definately solve it but i want PS.

I'm just wondering if my only option is to cut the bolt head off. it is pretty soft metal it seems.

are you talking about the 17mm power steering pulley or the 14mm A/C pulley?

only suggestion for the P/S pulley nut is use a 17mm 6 point impact socket with a breaker bar that or you may be up **** creek. if the standard size socket doesn't work i always try grabbing the next size smaller standard SAE socket and hammer that on, if that doesn't work you are SOL.

edit: ******* database errors, this is getting retarded..

well i am using metric wrenches....

but it would have to be a pretty big socket. i think i was using a 23mm? breaker bar and all.

i think the AC was tampered with by one of the previous owners because the compressor oblts were loose.

why do you want to take the pulley off? NEVER use standard wrenches on a vehicle that is completely metric. you'll end up rounding bolts and nuts before you realize it. forget the wd-40, its just more of a lubricant than an actual penetrating spray. if you're willing, grab a can of pb blaster or sea foam, or if you're really daring, rost off ice. either way, make sure you get a good six point socket and make sure its set well on the nut before you turn it. if you dont have a way to get to the store to get some spray, get some atf and coat the nut and threads in that. it has detergents that will break down a lot of rust and such, making it eaiser to free the nut.

some of those pulley nuts are shallow so they round off easily, once the damage is done there is nothing wrong with trying an SAE socket on a metric nut when a metric socket just wont fit anymore. that or you can sit on your thumbs after you are spinning in circles because the socket just won't bite anymore.

it still has good points. i stopped as soon as i noticed it was the wrench slipping and not the bolt loosening. ill probably just cut it off if i cant loosen it up this weekend. its really not that big of a deal but it just bugs me to know that there is something useless just laying loose in there taking up space.

well if a wrench doesn't work i just get out my ole trust 1/2" breaker bar, that usually does the trick or breaks something in the process.

breaking stuff is half the fun because then you have an excuse to tell your wife as to why you need to buy performance parts

i like how it says "odor" mail on the box...

theres a few things that were insanely tight. besides the pulleys (whch have been tampored with by someone and overtourqued) the struts were welded on it seemed like... a lot of the 10mm bolts are so tight that when i tried unscrewing them the heads just busted off...
