why don't my tail lights work?

I have Dash lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights. But I don't have rear tail lights, or front running lights.

Recently, I swapped in a new motor, converted to 5-speed tranny, and did a full upgrade on the suspension. There were a couple of wires I didn't hook up at the front of the car. They are on the left wire harness coming from the under dash fuse box. one is a single wire that exited the harness under the front bumper next to the left frame rail. then ran back into the engine bay and connected to a yellow wire that looked like some one other than Mazda ran.
The other exited the harness in about the same spot. it had two conductors with speaker type terminals on the end. I thing that went to engine bay too, but I can't remember or find what it was hooked to.

Other than those two wires, i hooked everything up. for now I have them wired to come on with the key. But I would really like to fix it the right way. Anybody know what's up? Could it be the switch? but then the dash lights wouldn't work...

Please help.
