ok my guage gets to right about where the arrow is pointing at the highest, but i also havnt driven the carfor more that like 2 hours though too but still, shouldnt it hea tup more after 2 hours maybe?

Also im having an acceleration problem, ill accelerate and itll be goin fast then it still be accelerating but itll slow down a bit then speed back up *sometimes* but usually if i shift itll go normal again until about 4k on the rpm gauge, could this be spark plugs maybe? it kinda idles rouph too like vrmmmmmmpopmmmmmpopmmmmmmmmmpopmmmmm....

anyway i hope ya guys canhelp...also are 87 rx-7s pretty reliable, mine has 144k miles and its in pretty good condition, the engines really clean and the interior is ok, its not ripped but the speakers suck in it and so does the stereo, and the 2 front speakers r missing and the middle consoleis gone (whatever held the power mirror buttons anyway), was this car worth $2,000?

Well, the temp gauge seems to be highly inaccurate (at best), so I wouldnt count on it to find out my temps....
Still, if it seems to be working, then you should be reading a little more than that after 30 min (tops). My TII (now, during the winter) goes to exactly the middle after 5-6 minutes warmup, and a lot faster during the summer (and it has slightly overheated 1-2 times)
The idle (especially if its cold) should be a weeny teeny bit rough, because the car tries to adjust constantly. It should pop now and then, so no worries there. But after it warms up, it should be smooth as silk.
What to do ? Pretty easy. Go to a rotary shop, and tell them to check the basics (filters, plugs, wires, intake)...

It probably either doesn't have a thermostat, or the one thats in it is stuck open.

maybe related, but is the fan supposed to be on all the time?it is in mine and i think that's why it takes a while to warm up, takes about 10 minutes before i start getting any heat.

Go buy a winter thermostat, something on the order of 190 degrees. My understanding is that the water temp gauge was altered sometime after 1987, and they read different than the good 86-87 models. You can check out your gauge by taking the lead off the water temp sensor, located along side the oil pressure sender. You put a resistor that you can purchase at Radio Shack on the the wire and then to ground, and your water gauge should read a given value. 153.9 ohms gives you the bottom two hash marks and 12.4ohms gives you the top two hash marks. The fsm has you take the temp sensor out of the block and put it into a vessel of water. You heat the water. When the water reaches 176 degrees, the resistance of the sending unit should read 57.7 to 49.3 ohms. The real answer is.... the first twelve words of this post. Ten bucks, home free.
