Question Why do you say that a headlight cover is a waste??

I was checking out the area in front of the air intake today, looking for some way to get cooler air in there, and it seems like a fresh air headlight cover would work awesome. If you just remove that little rubber flap behind it, the air will flow right into the filter, and if you had a air box it would be even better, because all of the air that it would get will be outside air. It seems to me that removing the FTP lenses would be worthless, because it will just smack into the headlight. It seems most peoples' opinions of these covers is that they are garbage. It seems to me to be the best way to get outside air into your intake. Am I missing something?

They do help, especially if you have a dedicated aftermarket airbox that seals around the intake.

fyi - www.mariahmotorsports.com can stamp your OEM headlight cover for cheaper than you can buy one - and it's better quality than the cheap replacements.

There's two reasons I wouldn't bother. First, I don't think they move much air. The opening is not very big and it's sitting at an area that doesn't receive air at a high pressure like the radiator opening. A decent sized duct in that opening would force more air through. Second, it's completely useless at night. This is when outside air is the most beneficial, and you can't use it!

Well, if you got the cover and removed your FTP , then you could have the best of both Yea, I didnt really think about the pressure area above the headlight, but It must do some good. Maybe Ill get one along with my cold air box , and do some experimenting. Not sure how yet though

I suppose if you use a headlight cover, and block off the rest of the engine bay (the way I've seen other cars), then it would be worth it..

I saw an aerodynamic picture of the air traveling around the car. And it seems to totally skip the headlight. Thats why the pop headlights aren't even a problem

The only thing I can think of is that during the heat of the day, some air will indeed flow through there, helping with air flow through the engine bay. At night, when you have your lights on, atleast its cooler outside and don't "need" that extra little bit of air flow like you might need during the day. Is it a worthless mod, nah, not if you don't have another reason to spend $150 plus paint for a mod.

How is a flat 90 degree angle at the front of the car not going to hurt your aerodynamics.

I have pondered all of what you guys have said before, I have come to the conclusion if you don't have an air box then it doesn't matter if your blowing colder air in, it simply be heated up by all the other "hot air" your fan is blowing around. I have a solution, I rencently cut a 3" hole right above the washer resivor, relocated the resivor and mounted my filter inline with brake cooling ducts, I have pics and am going to post a how to tommorrow.

P.S. I forgot to mention if you do buy a head ligh cover, DO NOT BUY THE ROTARY PERFORMANCE ONE!!!! its a piece of $150 crap fiberglass that flew off my car on the freeway, the fiberglass tabs broke off!! I found it on the side of the road all torn up sent it back to them and explain to them there product was a piece of ****, not to mention a rip off like their $150 "Bonez Filter". I'm Sorry if you guys like them but Rocky told me I would get a refund or a replacment at least, neither! that BASTARD didn't even call me back.

oh sorry just had to vent my anger so I don't go CRAZY, who me?

That's why you should always use a heat shield with a pod filter in the stock location.

Your new filter location is also a good idea, but I like my washer resrvior where it is! Make sure you post pix of what you did with it.

I agree NZ, I had actually made a heat shield out of lexan first off, sealed it with window cauking, it worked in that there was no turbulance in the air from the fan, and it "seemed" a little cooler but I wasn't satisfied. Oh yeah I mounted my washer resivor where my charcol canister used to be.....it works but dunno if thats were I'm going to keep it....

@ mariah it is $130

you either send them your orignal and they do that for you or they send you a modded 1 and you then send your original to them.

It is a bitch getting it off though
i 1 stripped the star skrews

I ran a piece of pre-heater hose I got at Auto Zone from the front of the car to between the radiator and frame then to the filter. The picture only shows one but today I routed another one where a tube that used to go to the ACV(which is gone)went. After driving I can get out and the bottom of the filter is cool, but the top is warm.I need to build a cold air box but haven't yet.

I have the Bonez inlet duct, and I think it just looks cool as hell. That's just me though. I'm sure it's at least a little functional. What do people think of Mariah's cold air box? I'm pretty sure they make one that is fitted for the fc that actually meets up with the hood perfectly too. Probably a pretty penny though. Those guys are freakin' geniuses.

Ditto...However, I am now working on a true ram air set up where my cone filter will sit infront of my Rad. Officially, my HL Cover Is useless and I have to find a replacement rubber flap.
