why is the cat smaller on the 87 se and the 88 vert is bigger?
Im debating to see if my cat is clogged ,due to the members of the club ,and the threads that members have answered.I have an 87 se(parts car) and I looked under the car an noticed that the cat is smaller than my 88 vert .Well I went to the 87 t2 and noticed the cat was also smaller.Im wondering if its possible to take the smaller cat and put it on my 88 vert.(temp)From eye view it looks if it would bolt on and then again it looks aliitle smaller(length wise)how would it effect the car by putting a smaller cat in place of the bigger cat???Im not driving the car its (doing resto.)that I have to move it around to get around to what Im doing

If the is a cat that is a different size it is probably a T2 cat.

Perhaps I wasz not clear??? I should have said all the S4 N/A cats are the same size.
If you look at the haynes (page 149) they show both the Series 4 turbo and the series 4 N/A exhausts. You'll notice the difference, by the little notes at the bottom of the pictures. Picture 26.1a shows a Non-Turbo (or N/A) exhaust. This is what should be on both your 'vert and 87 base or luxury parts car.
Your 'vert and 87 base or luxury coupe (they didn't make the SE in 87) are N/A or Non-Turbo cars right???
I suggested that the cat on your 87 Base or Luxury is a Turbo Cat.
I suppose you could use it, on the 'vert but the factory cat for the Turbo is designed to work at a lower temp than the N/A one and may burn out (although most aftermarket cats are the same for the Turbo and the N/A).
And are you sure you are just not confusing the size of the cat with the heat sheild? Perhaps heat shield is still on the 'vert and not on the parts car???

ok my vert has the heat shield that i have to unbolt to get to the bigger cat and the 87 lux has a heat shield to unbolt so I can get to the little cat .the turbo has a heat shield to get to the little cat as well and there all oem.Is it possible that only the verts had the bigger cats??Because you know that the clinton or haynes manuals dont say everything or list for the convertibles.but im almost sure there where 2 types of exhaust on the non turbos.it may have to do with some option thing or something.but see what you come up with never know ,thanks!!!!!!!
