Learn to clutch kick. Practice.

Go to the event, have fun. You can drift an open diff car, too, with practice.. I used to get sideways in my 88 SE all the time.

OK, so this is with a turbo and in Japanese but check it out:

Cheers,
Cody

EDIT: That youtube post above is stupid and dangerous. Keep motorsports (drifting or otherwise) in the right place - closed circuit / tracks.

Yup, JTP aka BoostinmyS5 used to drive a 90 GTU. He used to get sideways all the time, then he swaped in a t2 motor. Now he's pretty much pro. So keep practicing and have fun. Keep in mind your safety and the safety of others!!

A limited slip differential would definetly make you drift much better. Get a upgraded suspension and expect to spend an *** load of money on tires.

....spinning out is SCARY
Only When you don't know your car...
I drift my RC car but I don't really see the point in drifting... I grew up on dirt roads and country back roads curvy back roads and I could put just about any car sideways and then get it back under control, but to go around the corner with complete traction and control, to me, that is much more of a thrill. But to each his own.. From what I can gather drifting wastes tires, and body panels...

i dont no why everyone underestemates the power of the n/a.
just because you cant get as much power as a TII and you wont be the fatest in a straight line doesnt mean its useless

tehmonkay.....incase you didnt know....drifting isnt about power at all.......the first drifters learned to drift on their stock setup.....which is why the AE86 is so god damn popular in the drift world

and yes your n/a obviously has enough power just get an lsd so that the tires actually spin out and not catch some traction

I drift my na.

haha, thats at Va Int'l Raceway.

I paid $75 for that event, along with the other event in my photos at my photobucket, http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e3/skizskiz/FC3S

Honestly, NOTHING is better to learn how to drift other than seat time. Example: At both events, I had trouble learning to course and how to enter the turns. Without changing and suspension settings, and only changing my driving style, I went from horrible understeer to controlling my oversteer. Also, I didn't have amazing suspension either: tokico blues, intrax "performance look" springs, a few polyurethane bushings, and dtss elim. Dtss elim = amazing. Also, I'm only able to initiate with weight transfer and clutch kicking techniques since my ebrake doesn't work. I just learned shift lock, and i love it. Just get out there, and have fun!

Seat time FTW. Absolutely attend that event.

I have an 87 GXL so i already got an LSD, just need to change out the shocks so i quit wheel hopping everywhere.

I don't think i undersetimate the car, i only probably have 160hp at the flywheel with my mods anyway. Just never really spun the tires except in 1st gear.

i spun tires in 2nd gear, and popped into 3rd.. which kept the tires spinning around the corner. and i just eased out of the turn in 3rd.

This is the way to do things with a low power car. Clutch kick is your best friend.

I used to drift my 88 GXL all the time, started on empty back country roads in the rain at about 2am lol , kept it going in the dry(now that was scary) Then started attending events for practice...when I started it was bone stock.

Will it be fun hell yeah, even if you spin out on every corner, you will have a BLAST... little suggestion though, become friends with some Tire Shop guys, and then buy some steelies... get old rubber from them for free and stick it on the steelies... free, low traction Burn tires for drift practice

What can I say, I was poor.

Hey since people are talking about drifting n/a rx7's
I own a 1991 n/a M/T and i was wondering how much more would a streetported 13b engine would pull out?
and is it worth it?
I am gonna upgrade the suspension to KYB shock struts, eibachi springs, and poli-bushings
thanks

i'm also curious as to how much easier/harder would a streetport make drifting?
if its sufficient to my style i'm not gonna bother getting a turbo set-up anymore.
i like the idea of n/a.. less maintenance than turboed cars in my opinion.

As to my understanding, there is actually a slight difference between clutch kicking and shiftlock. Shift lock actually locks the rear end by basically droppin the gears and letting out the clutch fast which is hard as hell on the transmission (uses the gears to lock the rearend)... where as clutch kicking is kicking the clutch to break traction initially, or during a drift.

dropping the gear or just downshifting without giving it any gas would use the engine to lock the tires up with the lower revs causing the car to slide outward of the line your on.
and clutch kick would deal with giving it throttle.. or WOT in most cases, and kicking in the clutch causing it to feather into the higher RPMs causing the car to push forward inwards of the line your on..
atleast thats my take of things when you brake them down.
i'm sure its more complicated than that, in fact i'm positive there's more to it than that.
