In addition to this thread, and the other, I'd like to say that if ABS comes on slightly before it needs to... you could have stopped faster. If it comes on slightly after, then the tires did lock for a brief period of time, and no matter how well it can correct for this it provides unpredictability to the path of the car. If the ABS comes on .0000001 seconds before the tires lock, and only comes on just enough to keep the tires from locking (instead of what i've noticed to be the usual "set amount" it reduces braking) then it's just a damn good ABS system, but that is NOT what we have on our cars, and I don't know of any manufacturer who can claim this (though some are getting close these days).
Edit: I really do wish I could remember the 2 1/2 hour conversation me and my physics professor had on ABS, 'cause we brought up some really good points that I can't remember.

I stand by my statement that a good street driver will do everything possible to be aware of their surroundings and be able to avoid almost any possible accident.
Slamming into someone who stopped suddenly? Sorry, the law backs me up here, this is considered the fault of the following driver for following too closely.
Someone running a stop sign? Most stop signs I've seen, you have enough distance to tell if someone is coming at a rate that would make them unlikely to stop.
There are scattered exceptions - I'm not sure you'll be able to do anything about a sportbike doing 180 down a side street and blasting through a stop sign once you're in the intersection already, but money says that you'll hear the bike before you depart the stop sign.
And I am under the impression that the new high end ABS units (the ones showing up in cars tested on Top Gear & such) are really, really good at outbraking a human. It's just that we don't have one of those units in our cars.

I think there should be 2 classes of ABS. One called ABS that keeps your tires from locking up, and one called something else, like Braking Assistance System (or something more marketable) to differentiate if it's a system designed to out-brake humans or not. I think it would help pressure car manufacturers to meet the requirements to call their system by the better name to compete with companies that have good systems.

The stock ABS can help in slick conditions.
In good conditions, you can out brake it manually.
If it had an enable/disable switch, I would have kept mine.
Of course ABS has improved a lot in 15 years.

Are there times you can brake better than ABS? Yes.
Are there times ABS can prake better than you? Yes.
Here's the question. Which one is a bigger difference?
When you can brake better than ABS, you can brake a little better than ABS.
When ABS can brake better than you, it can brake a LOT better than you.
I race on the track and I wish I was permitted to add ABS to my car. (on the track there are other reasons that are even more important than the occasional shorter stopping distances - like no flat spotted tires)

My FC didn't come with ABS...but I've never locked my brakes up. I'm not saying that I haven't come to a point where it almost happened. But I think if you're a good driver you won't need to use the ABS and I think that 90% of the time that you use your ABS, it would of been better to do somthing else. I don't know if that's clear.
When I started driving using a 2000 camry I only used the ABS when I nearly ran a red light. Or when I wasn't paying attention and nearly hit the car in front of me.....both could of been avoided if I was paying more attention to the road

My 87 does not have ABS and I am very glad it does not. Not having it taught me along time ago how to properly brake a car.
There are certainly times when ABS will help. I know when AutoX a good ABS system can really help when you dive too deep into a corner.
It can also be very handy in the Rain.
I think it sucks **** in the snow.
I test the ABS in my 2000 SVT Contour in the snow going down hill. First I did as recommended with ABS, I pressed the pedal down as hard as I could and let the computer do the work. The car NEVER STOPPED. The ABS would engage but the car just kept rolling.
I then tested it with me braking. ( I never let the ABS kick in). I was able to stop the car in a very short distance, even on a hill in the snow.
My opinion is that the ABS in the 2nd Gen RX-7 is not worth having. There have been very few times that I was able to lock up the brakes on my RX. I think one of the biggest reasons for this is because I have always run very high performance tires with tons of grip. Heck, with DOT race tires on the car it was next to impossible to lock up the front tires on concrete.
Ditch the ABS. Then go learn how to threshold brake.

I have an S4 with no ABS.
I have a question. I am going to look at a 91 coupe for sale. The kid says it has ABS. I thought 110% that all 91 coupes did NOT come with ABS.
Can someone set me straight?
