Whinny sound

I baught a 90' Rx-7 and it has this very strange whinning sound. When I drive it gets louder with the rising rmps, but when i used the engine to slow me down there's no sound. I think it might be the thrust bearings but the thing is the entire clutch was replaced 12 000kms ago and everything runs, shifts and feel strong.. anyone got any suggestions?

Bearings in the transmission. Try using synthetic fluid and see if it quiets down.

There could be a number of causes, but the transmission is the number one cause of whining in neutral with the clutch out (in? depends on your point of view).

Basically, put it in neutral and take your foot off the clutch. If your transmission whines loudly, then it's time for a rebuild. It's also very evident when cruising under load.

i get a whine when downshifting into 2nd... also i get a harmonic rear end noise at 3500rpms in 4th.. (S5's didnt have this) And while in 5th i get a LOUD whine sound.

How much would a rebuild cost on an N/A s4 tranny?

Depends on who does the rebuild. I had mine done recently for $650 Canadian, which included some mods...

but if it's just the bearings, you wouldn't have to rebuild right? mine shifts perfectly and doesn't even grind..

Other than mine making alot of noise it shifts in and out of gear pefectly.. due partly to haveing a great clutch and new slave cyl assembly... But other than replaceing bearings and maybe re-doing the syncros she's pretty tip top. It might even be worth it to throw my n/a trans to the curb and go with a turbo drivetrain setup. correct?

-Markus

"with a turbo trans... She'll be Beefy!" CHEERS!

another option is alternator whine.

your speakers will whine if you have an amp sometimes.

just turn off the radio (dont' just turn it down).

Regarding cost of rebuild. Initially thought I had a problem and called local tranny shops and a garage with a great RX7 rep. Get this, estimates for my 5 speed ranged from $1,000 - $1,300. Only one said the cost could go up or down depending on what had to be replaced.

BTW, Mazda no longer sells new trannys or remans. Parts are available.
