Wheres the vin # on a 86 rx7 ???

I know its on the door jam but is there not suppose to be one up around the windshield ? Ive seen some cars with it on the windshield post but nothing here..just on the jamb only..Ive heard that they only have them on jamb only but I thought they had to be where a cop could see them..

I've seen them under the hood near the left hand side of the firewall, both etched into the firewall and on a metal plate.

vin

Look for a metal plate where the windshield and dash meet on the driver's side. You can see this by looking from outside of the car through the windshield at the dash. There will usually be a cutout in the dash vinyl. The "window" or cutout will be roughly 1/2" wide by 2 1/2"long. If your car is dusty or has had anything spilled on the dash this might be obscured by crud. It is there all the same. There is also a metal plate on the passenger's side of the firewall that also has the paint code on it, the sticker that the previous posts mentioned, and there are other places on cars where the VIN is located that are manufacturer's secret locations. This is to aid L.E. in trackng down stolen vehicles and chop shops. I am not absolutely certain but I think these "secret" locations are typically available to the FBI only. I know as a local cop I can't get anyone to tell me where they are. The location varies from model to model.

Newer vehicles like my Dodge Ram P/U have the VIN stamped on fenders, doors, bed, hood, tailgate, and just about every major part. Again this is an attempt to thwart chop shops.

I have one right under the windshield in front of the steering wheel like rotorhead said. You can see it best from outside.

I can assure you the VIN is where I stated (forward edge of the dash, driver's side). This location is prescribed by federal law. If it is not there then someone has deliberately removed it.

I would almost bet you have some crud or other material covering the plate.

The vin is on a metal plate riveted on the front driver's side defroster grille. These grilles have a tendancy to get dry rotted and is often not in the car or not in the car in one piece.
