wheel bearings question?

Hey

Well I had an inspection done when I bought my car and one of the things that was wrong was that the front and rear wheel bearings were loose. Well I've finally decided to do something about it because im painting my rotors and calipers so I might as well. I remember the mechanic saying something about being able to tighten the front bearings no problem but the rear ones need to be replaced? Can someone back me up on this or maybe clarify it for me? Just double checking if the rear ones need to be replaced when they are loose and if someone could please explain the difference between the front and rear bearings.

thanks
matt

I have the same problem with my front wheel bearings being loose. What they are is where the axle and stuff goes through the brakes. They are really cheap to buy new I got the inners for like 10 bucks each and outers for 14 bucks each, if you do get new ones make sure to get the races with them. Also as I mentioned there are two bearings per one wheel. However, the rear bearings I think are more complicated to replace, but im not sure.

Front wheel bearings can be tightened. It can make a noticeable difference in how the car feels on the road.

Ok that solves the front bearings. Now for the rears. My rear wheel bearings are loose as well? To my understanding, I can't tighten them? I can only buy new ones and get them replaced? Am I correct?

gotta replace em as far as i know

that site should say that the wheel bearings dont need to be tightened so much. as a general rule for tightening wheel bearings i just use the weight of the wrench to tighten it, back off drop the wrench until the wrench doesnt tighten anymore and repeat again. you NEVER want to overtighten them

oh yeah can just loose bearings cause whirrings sounds with the bearings, or does the sound mean they need to be greased or even replaced?

The front bearings are tapered and can be repacked with new grease if they are undamaged, the Lucas HP grease is great. We charge $95.00 to clean and repack the front hubs. The rear bearings are sealed ball/roller bearings. The upright must be removed and the hub/bearing will need to be pressed out. I don't recall what our price for replacing the rear bearings is.

good luck,
