wheel bearing replacement... but still clicks

ok. i bought new bearings and seals. for both front wheels.. i took everything apart cleaned everything really well. but. i checked the races. and they were great. so i used the new bearings. since i already bought them.. but anyways. i put everything back together. and greased everything. inside of the wheel hub..

one thing i dont know. it how tight to put the wheel hub bolt on.. right now. i have them snug.

and i was told by a friend. to spin the tire and snug the nut on while spinning.

That's about right. One guide I've seen says to tighten it a little, then loosen, spin and retighten while spinning, loosen, spin and retighten while spinning again. You should barely tighten it, like almost hand tight. I assume you replaced both the inner and outer bearings. If the bearings are good and it's tight enough, you shouldn't be able to tilt the wheel with your hands. When I had bad wheel bearings they hummed not clicked, so maybe you have a different problem.

You might have a problem with your driveshaft U-joints being worn out.
Mine hum like cRAZY and for a bit I thougth it was the bearings but when goign slow I heard some clicking and realized it was the dshaft.

Yea...wheel bearings definitely hum...no clicking. Generally drive axles that make that sound...

check your lower control arm bushings and ball joint.

Get big channel locks and squeeze the ball joint, if it moves up and down , they are no good, circular movement is good.

Check your lower control arm bushings by using a big pry bar and ty to budge them and see if they are tornand have access play

ok. well i checked everything theres no play in the tires.. most of the bushings are toast. but im sure its not causing the consistant clicking when im going straight... i had a friend ask me about some break antirattle stuff... but i dont know...

you know how brakes have the little sheet of metal on the back of the brake pads? will that cause clicking if its not there??

You may want to have a friend drive your car while you walk next to it and see if you can tell where the clicking is coming from. It is really difficult to determine the direction when sitting inside the car. As others have posted, most of the typical problems cause humming rather than clicking. If the clicking is from the rear, it could be bad halfshafts. When mine failed I noticed it mostly when the car was in reverse.

^^ I agree with him. Does it only happen under braking though? Or is it also while driving? If it happens while you're driving on a smooth road, I think that if it's clicking on a smooth road while accelerating/cruising...you probably have to replace the half shafts.

well.. i fixed the problem. lol it was the brake pads. whoever installed them before i bought the car. didnt use the little z shaped spring for the pads. but it was in there. and was causing my wheels to click.

Bump, hope you find some help.

There should be metal shims on the back of the brake pads called anti squeal shims. They keep the brakes from squeaking like a bus'. IIRC there should be a V shaped metal spring clip holding the two pads apart (or together?). It's fairly flimsy and hard to keep in place until everything is assembled. A Haynes manual or a googled guide on changing your brake pads should have a pic. There should be a bolt on each side of the caliper holding it in place.

Besides that I'd turn the wheel and see if anything is rubbing.

question. i know this may be thread jacking.(i'd rather use this thread since he solved his issue anyway)

but when i turn right, my whole wheel and front end vibrate. i just replaced my front passenger side wheel bearing not long ago after it had failed due to the previous owner putting one in, but not greasing it up.

i'd say if i turn 10-20 degree's while doing 35-40mph the wheel vibrates, but if i turn it back to center or turn left at any amount, there are no issues. the faster i go, the more centered upon the wheel it becomes.

any idea's?
