Here's the deal on the hoods. It's been a while since I researched this, so figure it's about 75% accurate:

If you have an early '86, 97% chance it will have an aluminium hood
All verts left the factory wtih aluminium hoods
After '86, aluminium hoods were mostly on GXLs
The GTUs always has an aluminium hood
TIIs are pretty random, but the 10AE came from the factory with an aluminium hood
The "GX" (maybe just Canadian) has an aluminium hood

my 89 vert had a steel hood. As does my 90 GTU. The reason that my vert has a steel hood is because the person who had it before me bought the car wrecked. He put a new driver side front fender on (S4) and a new hood on (also S4).

I got a '90 vert, aluminum baby! thank god too, taking that thing off by myself last month was hard enough as it was, I'd hate to see a steel one.

I feel cheated, then... I've had two GXLs. One an 88, and the current an 87.

I'm pretty sure both have been steel hoods...because they're both pretty damn heavy.

My '88 GXL has a steel hood.....either that or it's the heaviest dayum aluminum hood I've ever felt!!!

Dunno how that fits into your scheme of things, but thought you'd like to know.
