what would chip the turbine???

well i went and removed my turbo and manifold and when i pulled the turbo off i almost cryed..there are 2 fins that are almost complately gone and a couple that are chipped, im figureing one of 2 things could have happend

1) my car throw a apex seal (but i belive i hear the right amount of "swosshes" when i crannk the car by hand)

2) a big nasty hunk of carbon came loose ( the car has sat for about 14 months)

if it is a seal im not sure what im gonna do i dont have the money to get it rebiuld i might do it myself, but how are would it be??

Does your car burn any oil? It could have been a side or a corner seal. Is it the hot side that you saw the chips? If it is, something got chewed up... most likely a seal of some sort. do a compression test.

A big hunk of carbon? Well it doesnt really take much for something to bust when something's spinning at 100,000RPM +

So the car will not start, or you haven't tried to start it in 4 months?

I'm betting all my peanuts on a chewed apex/corner/side seal.

my car tossed an apex seal, I only had a tiny chip in my turbo. I could probably even still use it, but I decided to err on the side of safety and buy a new one instead.

for big chunks to be missing, something major would have to happen, I'd think.

Mine ate 3 seals and my turbo is fine. It boosts great. The only problem is the oil seals leak a bit of oil (stops once the turbo warms up).

This same thing happened to my turbo but it was not a problem with the engine at all. Im giving hope to your engine and pointing the shame to a common problem with s4 turbine housings.

My first turbo blew when the turbine manifold cracked sooo badly that a large piece chunked off and slammed the turbine wheel. So check your turbine housing for any pieces missing. You'll have to pull the cartridge off the housing.
