I ran a t2 without one for about 4 months once when I couldnt find it after an engine install. No harm I could see... But I'd recommend using it, maybe get another one from a junk yard or a friend or something.

The spacer is there for a reason. What specifically I dont know but my "GUESS" would be to space the injectors to maximize the atomization of fuel and also have the most beneficial spray pattern.

It's got nothing to do with the injectors' spray performance, they'll sit in the same place whether it's used or not. It appears to be a thermal insulator of some kind, to reduce heak soak to the fuel rail.

Without the spacer in place the fuel rail will not sit properly on the injectors and is too short to reach the engine without forcing it. This could potentially damage the injectors if you try to tighten the rail right down onto the engine. Not advised...

One, you're smashing the fuel injectors - at the very least you're going to squish the lower fuel injector grommet.

Two, NZConvertible is right - it's there for heat insulation.

In a pinch, I've seen two washers used to keep the spacing correct.
