What is this? And what does it do?

Hi, on my 87 TII what is this under the hood? Whats circled. Would it affect my idle if it were misadjusted?

Go here...Here..
and go to the last two pics.

Called whatsthis

And where should this be positioned? It looks like it has been tampered with. (I just bought the car a few weeks ago and am working on it)
Called this1

It's your Variable Resistor. It adjusts the Air/Fuel Ratio that sends the signal to the Engine Control Unit. The Variable Resistor effects Idle only!

You say you bought the car a few weeks ago. Do Invest In a Haynes Manual and have a look at www.fc3s.org and download a free manual to your car. As the above 2 will prove Invaluable to your maintenance In your car. Oh and of course here too. Good Luck...

That's the nut that tightens the crank angle sensor down, it controls the timeing of your car...as far as I know if the car idles propperly and accelerates smoothly then it shouldn't need adjustment...I may be wrong, though, but unless its call something else on this forum these guys are insane and are talking out of their asses...PM a guy who goes under the anme RETed, he's the local guru.
